Order of the Sinking Star’s “500-hour” figure is director Jonathan Blow’s estimate for a typical player trying to complete everything—not a measured average, a promise, or the time required to reach an ending. A preview of the game describes a large, interconnected puzzle adventure that makes the scale understandable, but it does not establish how long most players will take or whether the full game feels exhausting.
What does the 500-hour estimate mean?
In a December 12, 2025 preview, PC Gamer quoted director Jonathan Blow estimating “around 500 hours of gameplay” for a typical player who plays as a completionist. Blow explicitly qualified the number: “This is not a promise of any kind.” It is a developer estimate, not a time measured across a sample of players. PC Gamer’s preview was based on a short hands-off demo, rather than a full-game review.
That distinction matters: completionist play means pursuing far more than the main route. The same preview says players can reach the endgame meter and leave without clearing every area. So 500 hours is not a stated requirement for reaching an ending.
How long might a normal playthrough take?
A fan-made guide updated September 24, 2026 reports an estimate of up to 250 hours for normal-pace play and says the story does not require solving every puzzle. It attributes the figure to an IGN interview dated December 11, 2025, but the original interview was not verified here; treat the number as secondary reporting, not a confirmed playtime average. The guide’s explanation of the 250- and 500-hour estimates also distinguishes those estimates from measured playtime.

Neither figure establishes how long players actually take. The sources available for these estimates do not provide a post-launch completion-time dataset or an independently measured average.
Why does the game sound so complex?
The preview reports that the development team began with four self-contained games, then combined them so objects from different worlds could interact. Blow described the aim as exploring the “large possibility space” created by bringing those systems together. In practice, that premise suggests puzzles may ask players to reason across mechanics rather than apply one isolated rule at a time.

A large world with several puzzle systems
PC Gamer describes an overworld spanning six worlds, with more of its map revealed as players progress. Its examples include block-pushing puzzles and colored-beam puzzles, alongside character abilities that change how movable objects behave. The official store description, as reported in the preview, advertises more than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles; that is product-description language, not an independent count.

The scale implied by hundreds of hours and more than 1,000 advertised puzzles could feel demanding to players who want to solve every area. That is a reasonable reaction to the stated scope, not a documented consensus about the finished game. The available preview is not a full-game review, so it cannot establish that players generally find the experience exhausting.
If you enjoy long-form puzzle exploration and do not mind leaving some areas unfinished, the distinction between story progress and completionist play is useful: the headline figure concerns the latter. If you prefer to clear every puzzle, plan for a potentially very long commitment, while treating 500 hours as an estimate rather than a schedule.
