No—self-hosting Supabase is not a way to make local development cheaper. Supabase’s CLI local stack is free and does not consume project quota. Self-hosting is a separate decision: it runs a production stack on infrastructure you operate, with associated server costs and maintenance work.
Is local Supabase free?
Yes. Supabase describes local development as a self-contained environment on your computer, run with the Supabase CLI and a container runtime. The local workflow is free and does not consume your project quota, so you do not need to self-host a server to avoid hosted-project charges while developing.
You still provide the computer and spend time setting up and operating the local environment. But according to Supabase’s Local Development & CLI documentation, the local stack itself does not incur a Supabase-hosted project charge.

Use the CLI local stack for development and testing. You need the Supabase CLI and a Docker-compatible container runtime. Supabase lists Docker Desktop, OrbStack, Rancher Desktop, and Podman as compatible options. Its documentation also describes native runtimes as experimental, with limitations; check the Docker and native runtimes guidance before choosing one.

- Install the Supabase CLI and a compatible container runtime.
- In your project directory, initialize the Supabase project with
supabase init. - Start the local services with
supabase start. The CLI runs the local stack in containers. - Keep database schema and migrations in version control so teammates can recreate the same setup locally and apply it to a remote instance. Follow Supabase’s local development workflow.
The local stack is for development only: Supabase says it is not hardened for production and must never be exposed to external traffic. Use a managed project or a properly deployed self-hosted stack for production.
How do local development, managed Supabase, and self-hosting differ?
| Option | Best suited for | Costs and responsibilities |
|---|---|---|
| CLI local stack | Development and testing on a developer’s machine | Supabase says local development is free and does not consume project quota. You supply the computer and manage the local environment. |
| Managed Supabase | Teams that want Supabase to operate the hosted platform | Paid monthly costs include a fixed plan fee and variable usage charges. Each project’s dedicated Postgres compute is charged independently of database usage; selected quotas apply across the organization. |
| Production self-hosting | Teams that need to operate the stack on their own infrastructure | You provide and pay for infrastructure and take responsibility for provisioning, security, updates, service configuration, backups, and Postgres maintenance. Some managed-platform features are unavailable. |
These are not three ways to avoid the same bill. The local stack is a development workflow; self-hosting is a production deployment and operations choice.

What does managed Supabase billing include?
Supabase billing is organization-based. According to its billing documentation, monthly paid costs include a fixed plan fee plus variable usage charges. Each project has a dedicated Postgres instance on its own server, with compute charges independent of database usage. Quotas for selected usage categories are summed across projects in the organization.
The following figures are from Supabase billing documentation accessed October 7, 2026. Plan limits and overage rates can change, so verify them on the billing page before making a budget:

| Minimum | 4 GB | 2 cores | 40 GB |
| Recommended | 8 GB or more | 4 cores or more | 80 GB or more |
The guide says the minimum is suitable for development and small-to-medium production workloads. Removing services such as Realtime, Storage, imgproxy, or Edge Runtime can reduce resource requirements; enabling optional logging and analytics services increases them. These are infrastructure requirements, not a server price or a total-cost estimate.
Self-hosting also shifts operational work to your team. Supabase identifies server provisioning and maintenance, security hardening and updates, service configuration, and Postgres maintenance as operator responsibilities. Its self-hosting overview also lists managed-platform features that are not available in a self-hosted deployment, including managed backups and point-in-time recovery (PITR). Check the self-hosting overview against the features your application requires.
When can self-hosting make sense?
Self-hosting may be appropriate when your team has a concrete infrastructure or operational reason to run the stack itself and can take on the responsibilities that come with it. It is not automatically less expensive than a managed project: the relevant comparison includes hosting, compute, backups, monitoring, security work, maintenance time, and any managed features you would lose.
Supabase’s published guidance does not establish a workload-independent break-even point. Infrastructure needs and operating effort vary by deployment, and the documented resource baselines do not provide a price. To compare options for your own application, write down the expected workload and required services, price the infrastructure and backup/monitoring choices for your region, and include the team time required to maintain the deployment. Compare that total with the managed plan fee, project compute, and expected usage charges.
