Buy a LEGO set before retirement if you want that specific set, can afford its current total price, and would regret missing it. Don’t buy simply because “retiring soon” appears to promise a future price rise: retirement is an availability signal, not proof of investment value.
What LEGO retirement statuses actually mean
LEGO’s US Last Chance to Buy page lists sets LEGO describes as soon to be retired that are still offered for purchase. It can help prioritize a set you already want, but the page, stock, and availability vary by market and can change.
LEGO’s availability-status definitions distinguish between these labels:
- Retiring soon: LEGO says the set will be retired very soon. This is an official availability status, not a promise that a particular date is the final day to buy it.
- Retired Product: LEGO.com defines this as: “The set is no longer in our current assortment and we won’t be getting any more stock.”
- Sold out: A temporary stockout is not the same as retirement. LEGO says a sold-out set might return, though the restock date may be unconfirmed.
Check the live product listing in your market before deciding. A set’s status at one retailer—or a retailer’s “sold out” badge—does not establish that LEGO has retired it.

Are LEGO retirement dates official?
Third-party retirement lists are estimates, not LEGO announcements. BrickEconomy says its predicted dates draw on factors such as sell-out cycles across LEGO retail markets, the lifespans of similar sets, and a machine-learning model. It updates its estimates regularly, so a listed date is neither fixed nor guaranteed.
For a set you are considering, cross-check its exact set number on LEGO’s market-specific Last Chance to Buy page, its LEGO product listing, and other retailers. Note the date you checked: availability and estimates can change, and a retailer may have stock after LEGO stops carrying the set.

A collector’s checklist before you buy
- Would you want it if its resale value never rose? Building, displaying, gifting, or completing a collection with the exact set is a solid personal reason to buy. If you only want it because you expect a price increase, treat that expectation as uncertain.
- What is the total price today? Compare the live set price plus shipping with your budget and any available discounts. A predicted retirement date alone is not a reason to pay a scarcity premium.
- How strong is the retirement signal? An official LEGO “Retiring soon” label is stronger evidence of LEGO’s current status than a third-party predicted date. Record the set number and the date checked so you can distinguish a current listing from an older estimate.
- Could another set meet the same need? Compare successor models, similar designs, or other sets in the same theme. If a replacement would satisfy your collection, missing this particular set may matter less; replacement risk is also one factor in specialist market analysis.
- What if you wait? The set may still be available from other retailers after LEGO stops carrying it, or later on the secondary market. Neither future availability nor price is certain. Compare total cost and condition rather than assuming retirement instantly makes a set rare.
- If you are investing, what has actually sold? Separate completed transactions and your potential net proceeds from asking prices, estimated market values, and forecasts. Account for selling fees, shipping, applicable taxes, storage, and how long your money would be tied up. The estimates discussed here do not establish a net realized return for an arbitrary set or buyer.
