Uploading a file to ChatGPT does not automatically mean it will be used to train models, but its handling depends on your account, settings, chat mode, file storage, and—if you use a managed workspace—your organization’s rules. Before uploading sensitive material, check which account you are using and whether the file is necessary for the task.
Does ChatGPT use uploaded files to train its models?
For eligible personal accounts, the setting Improve the model for everyone controls whether new conversations are used to improve OpenAI’s models. Open Settings > Data controls and turn it off before starting a new conversation. OpenAI says those new conversations will not be used to train its models, but they can still appear in chat history. The setting may be unavailable or governed by workspace or account controls.
This is not a retroactive deletion switch: changing it affects new conversations, not whether an existing chat or separately stored file remains in your account. See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ for the current control details.

Temporary Chat is not used to improve models while it remains temporary and does not appear in chat history. OpenAI may nevertheless retain a copy for safety purposes for up to 30 days. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and is governed by the normal settings. Temporary Chat therefore changes history and model-improvement handling; it is not a promise of immediate or zero retention. Details are in OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ.

What happens to an uploaded file after you delete a chat?
A chat and a file saved separately in Library are distinct items. Deleting the chat does not necessarily delete a Library copy; if the file is still there, delete it in Library as well. OpenAI says a deleted saved chat is removed from the account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to exceptions such as legal or security obligations or prior de-identification. Deleted Library files are also generally scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions.
Files associated with projects or GPT knowledge may have their own retention conditions. Check the relevant workspace or feature controls rather than assuming that deleting one chat removes every copy. OpenAI describes file and chat deletion in its Chat and File Retention Policies and explains Library storage in its Library guidance.

How personal chats, Temporary Chat, and workspaces differ

What to check before uploading a sensitive file
- Confirm the account or workspace. Check whether you are signed into a personal account or an organization-managed workspace, and follow the organization’s policy for customer, personal, or confidential work material.
- Minimize the file. Ask whether ChatGPT needs the whole file. Remove unrelated sensitive content or use a less sensitive excerpt when that will answer the question.
- For eligible personal accounts, check the model-improvement setting. Go to Settings > Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone before starting new conversations if you do not want those conversations used to improve models.
- Choose Temporary Chat only if its trade-offs fit. It stays out of history and is not used for model improvement while temporary, but a safety copy may be retained for up to 30 days.
- If removing an upload later, check both places. Delete the chat from history and separately delete any file that remains in Library. For project or GPT knowledge files, use the relevant controls.
When you should avoid uploading
Do not upload a file if its contents are prohibited by your employer’s or client’s policy, or if you cannot accept the applicable storage and retention conditions. For highly sensitive personal or confidential information, first remove identifying details or provide only the minimum excerpt needed. A setting that limits model improvement does not by itself remove a chat from history or delete a separately stored file.
