Kaspersky can provide antivirus protection, but it cannot replace the Windows security updates Microsoft no longer provides. Plan to move to a supported operating system, or replace the computer if it cannot run one.
What “Windows 8” means for support
Check whether the PC runs Windows 8 or Windows 8.1: Microsoft support ended on different dates. Windows 8 support ended January 12, 2016; Windows 8.1 support ended January 10, 2023. Microsoft says unsupported Windows continues to work, but no longer receives Microsoft software or security updates, which leaves it at greater risk from malware. See Microsoft’s explanation of unsupported Windows.
These are separate issues: Windows may still start and run; a particular Kaspersky version may list the operating system as compatible; and Microsoft may no longer service that operating system. Compatibility with an antivirus product does not restore operating-system support.
What Kaspersky can—and cannot—do
Kaspersky Internet Security 21.2 and Kaspersky 21.9 documentation list Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 among their requirements. The 21.2 documentation also says internet access is needed to install and activate the product and update its databases and application modules. These are version-specific, older requirements, not proof that a current Kaspersky product supports Windows 8/8.1 or that your installation can still receive current updates. Check the support information for your exact Kaspersky product and build, or ask Kaspersky support.

Even when antivirus software is compatible and updating, it is only one layer of protection. It cannot supply the operating-system fixes Microsoft has stopped issuing.
What to do next
Move to a supported operating system if the PC can run one
Microsoft recommends upgrading to a supported Windows release. Before making the move, check that the computer meets the current requirements and that the applications and peripherals you rely on will work. Back up files and plan for transferring data and settings; Microsoft notes that a move may also require reinstalling applications.

Replace the PC if it cannot run a supported version
Microsoft recommends replacing a device that cannot meet requirements with one that supports Windows 11. Choose based on compatibility with your work and applications, not a particular model; no specific computer is required by this guidance. See Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 end-of-support guidance.
Reduce exposure while you arrange the change
- Avoid using the old PC for banking, shopping, work accounts, or other sensitive activity.
- Keep independent backups of important files.
- Do not treat an installed antivirus product as a substitute for operating-system servicing.
Microsoft also states that Edge 109 was the last supported Edge version for Windows 8.1. That is specific to Edge; it should not be taken as a claim about every browser or application.
