It can be safe for a child to use AI for homework when the use is age-appropriate, supervised, permitted by the school, and focused on learning—not on replacing the child’s work. Before use, check the service’s age rules and privacy practices. Help your child verify answers and avoid sharing personal or confidential information. AI is not automatically safe or unsafe for every child or assignment.

What makes AI homework use safe or unsafe?

Safety depends on several things working together: the child’s age and maturity, the particular service’s terms and data practices, the assignment, adult guidance, and the school’s rules. UNESCO recommends age-appropriate, educationally valid use that protects learner agency; UNICEF’s guidance emphasizes children’s safety, privacy, and best interests. UNESCO’s guidance and UNICEF’s guidance on AI and children offer principles, not a universal approval of every AI service.

How old does a child need to be?

There is no single age that establishes whether a child may use every AI tool. Check the specific service’s current terms, applicable local rules, and the school’s policy separately. UNESCO’s 2023 guidance proposes age limits for independent conversations with generative AI, and its 2023 communication described age 13 as a classroom threshold. These are UNESCO recommendations, not universal legal requirements or confirmation that a particular service permits a child’s use. The available sources do not establish current age rules for every country or service. UNESCO’s communication on regulating generative AI in schools explains its position.

What should parents check before a child uses an AI tool?

Age terms and school rules

Read the tool’s current minimum-age and account rules for your location. Ask the teacher or check the school’s policy for the particular assignment: a school may allow AI for one purpose and prohibit it for another. Service terms and school rules are not interchangeable.

Privacy and information shared

Check what information the service collects and how it uses it. Unless the school or a trusted adult has approved the tool and the specific use, a child should not enter identifying, sensitive, or confidential information. That includes details that could identify the child or another person. UNESCO recommends informing learners about data collection and use; UNICEF identifies children’s data and privacy as core concerns.

Suitability and oversight

Consider whether the tool is appropriate for the child’s age and learning needs, whether its answers can be checked against class materials or reliable sources, and whether an adult can guide its use. When comparing services, also look at data retention and available privacy controls. Official guidance supports these as useful comparison criteria but does not rank products.

How can AI help without doing the homework?

Use it to support the child’s thinking: for example, ask for an explanation of a concept, a hint, or a practice question. Then have the child work through the problem and explain the answer in their own words. By contrast, submitting generated work as the child’s own can bypass learning and may break the teacher’s rules. UNESCO emphasizes human agency and intrinsic motivation, and recommends: “Use GenAI tools to minimize the pressure of homework and exams, rather than to exacerbate it.” That wording comes from UNESCO’s 2023 Guidance for generative AI in education and research.

How should a child check AI answers?

Treat an AI response as a suggestion to evaluate, not as a verified answer. Ask the child to compare it with the textbook, lesson notes, or sources the teacher recommends, and to show how they reached the result. UNESCO calls for learners to question output accuracy and for educational AI systems to be validated. The cited guidance does not establish a general homework error rate, so no particular percentage of answers can be assumed reliable or wrong.

What are the possible benefits and limits?

UNICEF identifies potential uses of AI for learning support and accessibility, including for children with disabilities. These possibilities do not prove that AI homework use generally improves learning. UNICEF also says evidence about effects on children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development is lacking. Its project page reports that more than a third of 9- to 11-year-olds in Argentina turn to ChatGPT for information, but does not specify the year for that figure. It also describes research with 12,000 children and their parents or caregivers that found significant divides, particularly across the global South, in access, use, trust, and risk exposure; this is not a global prevalence estimate. See UNICEF’s AI for children project page.
