There is no dependable rule that waiting will make a fill-up cheaper. If you need fuel for a safe or necessary trip, buy it when convenient; wait only when you have enough fuel to spare and nearby prices give you a reason to expect a worthwhile drop. National averages and seasonal patterns provide context, not a forecast for your local station.

Should you get gas now or wait?

Base the decision on your tank, your next trip, and prices at stations you can realistically use—not on a prediction that prices will fall everywhere.

  • Fill up now if your tank is low, you need fuel for an upcoming trip, or delaying would create a practical or safety risk. A possible small price decline is uncertain; running short is not a useful way to pursue savings.
  • Waiting may make sense if you have ample fuel, no immediate trip, and nearby stations show a reason to expect a meaningful local drop. Check again before you need to drive.
  • Compare equivalent prices: check the grade your vehicle requires and account for self-serve versus full-serve and cash versus card pricing where applicable.

A national price change does not guarantee the same change at a station near you. For an immediate purchase, current local station prices are more useful than a national weekly average.

Why fuel prices can rise or fall

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) says retail gasoline prices are mainly affected by crude oil prices and the amount of gasoline available to meet demand. Prices can rise when supply falls relative to actual or expected demand. Refinery and pipeline problems, imports, inventories, seasonal demand, and seasonal fuel specifications can also affect the pump price. EIA explains the factors behind gasoline price fluctuations.

Wholesale expectations matter too: expectations about future supply and demand influence futures prices and inventory decisions. Gasoline inventories typically decline during the U.S. summer driving season and recover in winter, but those broad mechanisms cannot tell you what a particular station will charge tomorrow. EIA describes supply-and-demand balances and how prices and crack spreads relate to petroleum products.

Do seasonal patterns tell you when to buy?

U.S. retail gasoline prices have historically tended to rise in spring, reach a late-summer peak, and generally be lower in winter. EIA reports that from 2004 through 2023, the average monthly U.S. retail price of regular gasoline in August was about 40 cents per gallon higher than in January. This is a historical average—not a prediction that prices will follow that path in any particular year or week. See EIA’s retail gasoline price table.

Local conditions can depart from the national pattern. Prices vary with fuel requirements, refinery schedules or outages, transportation limits, demand, and inventories. California, for example, uses a special gasoline blend that is more costly to produce and has limited infrastructure connections to other regions. EIA discusses regional gasoline prices and their outlook.

How much should you trust the national price?

EIA’s displayed national all-grade weekly price was $4.603 per gallon for the week of September 28, 2026, compared with $4.610 for the week of September 21, 2026. That small week-to-week movement describes a national benchmark; it does not establish the price at a nearby station or predict its next change. The EIA weekly table provides the dated figures.

EIA’s weekly estimates represent prices collected at 8:00 a.m. local time on Monday. They are generally self-serve and cash prices except where those options are unavailable, and the estimates use sampling methods that may include imputation for nonresponse. They are useful for national and regional comparisons, not live quotes for a particular outlet. Read EIA’s methodology for weekly retail gasoline estimates.

What to check before deciding

  1. Check your fuel need. Consider your current reserve and the distance to your next necessary trip. Do not delay a needed fill-up to chase an uncertain decrease.
  2. Compare nearby stations. Look at stations you can conveniently reach, for the correct grade and the service and payment conditions you will actually use.
  3. Look for a local reason to wait. A few nearby prices moving down may be relevant to your decision; a seasonal average or national weekly figure alone is not a local prediction.
  4. Use outlooks as context, not certainty. EIA’s Short-Term Energy Outlook provides monthly, quarterly, and annual U.S. averages. It is not a promise about an individual station’s price.
