For most modern monitors, leave the monitor’s power switch on and let it enter standby after the computer shuts down. Turn it fully off for long absences, if the screen or power light stays active, or if its standby features consume more power than you need. With an efficient monitor, the difference between standby and full power-off is usually measured in cents per year.
What happens when the computer shuts down?
Shutting down the computer normally stops its video signal. The monitor may briefly show “No signal,” then change to a low-power state. The delay and exact behavior depend on the model, cable, dock and input settings.
- Active: The panel displays an image and uses normal operating power.
- Display sleep: The panel and much of the display electronics power down after inactivity or signal loss.
- Standby or off mode: The screen is dark, but enough circuitry remains powered to detect a signal or respond to the power button.
- Power disconnected: The monitor has no meaningful operating draw.
Windows treats turning off the display and putting the computer to sleep as separate timers, so the monitor can sleep while the computer remains awake. See Microsoft’s display, sleep and hibernate timer documentation.
Does leaving the monitor on waste electricity?
Leaving the switch on is inexpensive when the monitor really enters standby, but standby is not necessarily zero watts. USB-C charging, USB hubs, Ethernet, speakers, KVM hardware, network wake and input detection can remain active.

ENERGY STAR separates On, Sleep and Off modes for displays. Its criteria require a display with an Off Mode to measure below 0.5 watts in that mode; see the ENERGY STAR display criteria. This is a requirement for qualifying products, not a promise that every monitor draws the same amount.
For scale, a continuous 0.5-watt load uses about 4.38 kWh per year. At an assumed $0.20 per kWh, that is approximately $0.88 per year. If the same load runs eight hours each night, it uses about 1.46 kWh, or roughly $0.29 per year at that illustrative rate. Your measured wattage, connected accessories, operating hours and utility tariff determine the actual cost.
As a model-specific example, HP lists 55 W typical operating consumption and 0.5 W standby for the EliteDisplay S270n. Do not treat those figures as universal ratings.

Does leaving it on damage the monitor?
A monitor left with its switch on but sitting in standby is in a normal designed operating state. Modern displays are built to move between active, sleep and off modes; leaving the switch on does not automatically damage them.
That is different from displaying a static image for hours. OLED manufacturers may specify panel-care cycles and precautions for static content. Follow your model’s manual rather than applying a universal burn-in rule. Conventional LCDs also have finite component life, but there is no general need to keep them powered continuously or to avoid ordinary daily power-state changes.
Should you press the monitor’s power button every night?
| Situation | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Normal daily use and reliable standby | Leave the switch on | Convenient; standby energy is usually small. |
| Screen remains lit after shutdown | Fix settings or turn it off | Avoids active-display consumption and unwanted light. |
| Vacation or several days away | Turn it off; disconnect power if appropriate | Eliminates standby draw during a long absence. |
| USB-C monitor charging or networking devices | Leave it powered or disable selected features | Full power removal may stop charging, Ethernet, USB or KVM functions. |
| Multiple monitors rearrange windows when one is off | Leave that display in standby | Some systems treat a fully powered-off display as disconnected. |
| OLED showing static content | Use display sleep and the manufacturer’s panel-care settings | Reduces exposure to a static image. |
There is normally no required shutdown order. You can shut down the computer first; the monitor should lose its signal and enter standby. On multi-monitor systems, however, powering a display completely off can change display numbering, resolution, window placement or dock behavior. These effects vary with the operating system, graphics driver, cable and monitor firmware.

How to make the monitor turn off automatically
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → System → Power & battery.
- Open Screen and sleep.
- Set Turn off my screen after to your preferred idle period.
- Set Put my device to sleep after separately if desired.
Supported Windows 11 computers may also show Automatically turn off my screen when I leave under Settings → System → Power & battery; hardware, firmware and organizational policy determine availability. Microsoft documents these options in its Windows battery-saving guidance. A screensaver is not an energy-saving substitute: Microsoft notes that sleep uses less power than running a screensaver (screen-saver guidance).

Sleep suits short absences; hibernation saves the session to disk and powers down more completely. See Microsoft’s shutdown, sleep and hibernate guide. Open System Settings and check Lock Screen, Displays or Battery for display-off and sleep controls. Labels vary by macOS release and Mac type. Use Apple menu → Sleep or Apple menu → Shut Down as appropriate, and verify the exact labels for your release.

- Select the time in the bottom-right corner.

Enterprise administration can restrict these settings. Google’s Chromebook shutdown and sign-out guidance explains the available behavior.
Monitor menu
Look for Auto Standby, Deep Sleep, Power Save, Eco Mode, Auto Power Off and options for USB charging while off. ENERGY STAR’s monitor guidance describes power-management expectations, but the model manual determines which features your monitor actually provides.
What if the monitor stays on after shutdown?
- Wait through the monitor’s programmed signal-loss delay.
- Inspect its on-screen menu for standby, deep-sleep, eco and USB-power settings.
- Check every input; another computer, console, dock or adapter may still be sending a signal.
- Temporarily disconnect USB-C docks, hubs, splitters and KVM devices.
- Reseat or replace the cable and adapter; a dock can maintain a hot-plug condition.
- Install graphics-driver and monitor-firmware updates supplied by the manufacturers.
- Measure outlet consumption with a reputable plug-in power meter if the cost matters.
- Use the monitor’s physical power button if the panel remains lit or measured standby draw is excessive.
Connected displays can also fail to recover correctly after computer sleep or hibernation. Reconnecting the display or restarting the computer may resolve that class of problem, as described by Microsoft.

Are smart plugs and switched power strips worthwhile?
They make sense for a monitor unused for days when you want a guaranteed near-zero load and do not need standby functions. They are a poor fit for USB-C laptop charging, Ethernet, KVM, remote wake, powered USB peripherals or shared workstations. Cutting power can reset peripherals, disable networking, change display enumeration and create an inconvenient startup sequence. Measure first; a low-standby monitor may save less than a power meter or smart plug costs.
What about several monitors?
Leave all displays powered if they reliably enter standby and you value a simple workflow. Turn them off when combined standby consumption is measurable, a power LED is bothersome, a USB hub is unnecessary, or you will be away for a long period. Remember that turning a display off in the operating system may leave it in signal-detect standby, while pressing the monitor’s own power button may invoke a deeper mode; the model determines the difference.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Leave the monitor’s switch on for normal use if it enters standby. Turn it off when it fails to sleep, keeps unnecessary USB or network features active, bothers you with light, or will sit unused for an extended period.
