Keep targeted compatibility testing only when a customer, internal application, contract, or supported legacy workflow still depends on IE-specific behavior. In those cases, test the organization’s supported Microsoft Edge IE mode configuration—not an unmanaged setup assumed to match it.
Why routine Internet Explorer testing has ended
Microsoft ended support for the IE11 desktop application on June 15, 2022, for certain Windows 10 versions. That date is not a blanket statement about every Internet Explorer component on every Windows edition: Microsoft ties IE support to the lifecycle of the Windows product where it is installed. Check the status of the exact Windows edition and configuration your organization uses in Microsoft’s IE11 end-of-support announcement and its Internet Explorer and Edge lifecycle FAQ.
For new development without a confirmed IE dependency, spend testing effort on browsers and configurations your project actually supports. Microsoft identifies Edge as the direction for customers and IE mode as the compatibility path for organizations that still rely on legacy IE sites and applications. The end of the standalone desktop app is not, by itself, a reason to keep IE11 in every routine test matrix.
When targeted legacy testing is still necessary
Keep a focused test when there is concrete evidence that a workflow still depends on IE behavior. Relevant evidence includes a named customer requirement, an internal line-of-business application, a contract, or a legacy site that the organization must continue to support.

- Confirm which application, site, or workflow requires compatibility and who depends on it.
- Ask the application vendor whether it supports the workflow and the specific environment you plan to test.
- Identify the Windows edition, Edge version and organizational policy configuration used by affected users.
- Test the workflow in that managed configuration, including the steps users actually perform—not just whether the page opens.
Microsoft says IE mode enables backward compatibility, but that general statement does not establish that a particular application works in it. Verify the application’s behavior and vendor support directly.
Use Edge IE mode for supported legacy workflows
Microsoft directs organizations with IE-based site dependencies to configure those sites to open in Microsoft Edge using IE mode. Microsoft says IE mode will be supported through at least 2029 and that it will give at least one year’s notice before retiring it. This is a lifecycle commitment for the compatibility mode, not a recommendation to build new sites for IE.

Microsoft Support describes adding a site to IE mode in Edge. The available setting may be disabled or controlled by organizational policy on a managed device, and an Enterprise Site List may govern which sites open in the mode. Follow the instructions for Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge, then validate on the organization-managed device and policy setup users actually have. An unmanaged test computer may not represent that environment.
Separate browser compatibility from service support
IE mode does not extend a service’s own IE11 support policy. Microsoft explicitly says that using IE mode does not extend IE11 access to Microsoft services beyond their separately announced end dates. Its historical announcement names Teams web app, Azure DevOps and Azure Portal among services that stopped supporting IE11 on specified dates; those past policy details are not a current compatibility promise. Check the service’s current support policy rather than assuming IE mode restores access.

Choose what belongs in your test plan

Revisit the legacy test when the dependency changes: for example, when the application vendor changes its support position, the organization changes its Windows or Edge configuration, or the workflow is retired. Do not infer a compatibility guarantee from the fact that a site can be opened in IE mode.
