GTA Online is not universally free. You need access through Grand Theft Auto V (GTAV) or a standalone GTA Online edition where it is sold. A temporary free-play event for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ended on November 17, 2025; it does not make the game free now. Console players also need the applicable online-multiplayer subscription, while PC players need a Rockstar Games account, internet access and a compatible computer.
Is GTA Online free?
Only in limited circumstances. If you already own a qualifying copy of GTAV, GTA Online may be included with that access; otherwise, you need to acquire GTAV or a standalone GTA Online edition where available. Current prices depend on your region, platform store, edition and any active discounts, so check the store for your country before buying.

Rockstar ran a free-play event for the standalone game on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S from November 11 through November 17, 2025. During that event, players did not need PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass. Rockstar’s support page, last updated November 11, 2025, says that after the trial ended players needed to acquire GTA Online Standalone and the console subscription requirement returned. This was separate from a historical PS5 offer in 2022: PlayStation said players could claim GTA Online at no cost until June 14, 2022, but still needed PS Plus to play online afterward. That expired promotion does not indicate current availability. See PlayStation’s 2022 launch announcement.

What do you need to play GTA Online?
The requirements depend on your platform. On consoles, you need the game entitlement and the platform’s online-multiplayer access. On PC, you need the game, a Rockstar Games account, an internet connection and hardware that meets the requirements for the PC edition you install.

What you need on PC
Account and connection
Rockstar says a Rockstar Games account is required on PC for installation, online play and certain online features. You also need an internet connection and a valid GTAV/GTA Online entitlement. See Rockstar’s account requirements.
GTAV Enhanced minimum and recommended specifications
Rockstar lists the following specifications for GTAV Enhanced on PC. These are for Enhanced specifically; the same Rockstar page lists separate Legacy requirements. Confirm which edition you intend to install, and recheck the official page because requirements can change.

PS5
Yes. The PS5 standalone listing says PS Plus is required for online play. The November 2025 event temporarily waived that requirement, but the waiver ended with the event. Check the PS5 PlayStation Store listing.
Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar says the Xbox Game Pass requirement returned after its free event. Its trial announcement does not name the current subscription tier, and eligibility can depend on local terms. Check the Microsoft Store listing for your country before subscribing or purchasing.

Are GTA+ and Shark Cash Cards required?
No. GTA+ is an optional membership for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and GTAV Enhanced PC, with rotating benefits. Rockstar’s trial notice said members could access GTA Online through the GTA+ Games Library, but catalog content and eligibility can change; check the GTA+ guide for current details.
