Yes. Google Wifi is a mesh Wi-Fi system whose primary point acts as the router: it connects by Ethernet to a modem and routes the home network’s internet connection. You still need an internet plan from an ISP. Extra Google Wifi points extend that compatible mesh; they are not universal repeaters for routers from other brands.
What “router” means in a Google Wifi setup
Google describes Google Wifi as a home mesh Wi-Fi system that replaces a traditional router. In a typical setup, the connection runs from the ISP’s service to a modem, then by Ethernet to the primary Google Wifi point, which acts as the router for devices on the home network. Google’s description is that the system “replaces your traditional router and provides seamless, reliable Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home.” (Google: What is Google Wifi?)
The modem, router, and internet service are distinct parts of the connection. Google Wifi can take the router role, but it does not replace the modem or provide ISP service.

Google Wifi uses mesh networking: the primary point routes traffic, while additional compatible points cooperate to extend Wi-Fi coverage. Google says devices can roam between points as they move around the home. A point can be used as the primary router or, in a compatible setup, as an additional mesh point. This is different from adding a generic repeater to any existing router. Google says Google Wifi cannot be used as an extender or repeater for a third-party router. It forms a mesh with compatible Google Wifi and Nest Wifi devices instead. Nest Wifi Pro is not compatible with that mesh. (Google: What is Google Wifi?; Google: Compare Wifi products)
What to expect from coverage and performance
Google’s technical specifications list coverage of up to 1,500 square feet per Google Wifi point. That is a published estimate, not a guaranteed result for every home. Google notes that home size, building materials, and layout affect how far the signal travels; ISP service also affects internet speed. For placement, Google recommends open locations and points about one to two rooms apart. More points are not automatically better: Google advises against using more than five mesh devices because additional units can degrade performance. (Google: What is Google Wifi?)

Setup requirements
Google says setup requires active internet service, a Google Account, a supported mobile device, and the current Google Home app. Connect the primary point to the modem with the supplied Ethernet cable, then use Google Home to set up the network. (Google: What is Google Wifi?)

Wired backhaul and network layout
Additional Google Wifi points can connect wirelessly or by Ethernet. Google’s wiring guidance places mesh points downstream of the Wifi router in the network; arbitrary cabling can create routing or network-loop problems. Google recommends an unmanaged switch, or appropriate configuration of a managed switch, where a switch is needed. Follow Google’s supported topology rather than assuming any arrangement of router, switch, and points will work. (Google: Hardwire Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi or Google Wifi with Ethernet)
Google Wifi hardware basics
Google lists Google Wifi as dual-band AC1200 Wi-Fi, supporting 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, with two Gigabit Ethernet ports per point. It is a Wi-Fi 5 product, so when comparing systems, check the Wi-Fi generation and bands, compatibility with equipment you already own, Ethernet and backhaul options, the home’s construction, setup requirements, and the number of points needed. Does Reddit change the answer?
The question is sometimes phrased as “Is Google Wifi a router Reddit,” but Reddit wording does not alter the product’s role. Google’s documentation establishes that the primary Google Wifi point acts as the router in its mesh system. Without a specific Reddit thread, there is no basis to claim a universal Reddit consensus or attribute an experience to Reddit users.
