Yes—if what you liked most about Ghost of Tsushima was its combat, exploration, and cinematic presentation. Ghost of Yōtei gives you a new lead character, setting, and weapon-focused combat while keeping a familiar open-world structure. If Tsushima’s repeated optional activities were what wore you down, or you want a major reinvention rather than an evolution, waiting for a sale is the safer choice.
Is Ghost of Yōtei a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima?
It is a standalone story, not the next chapter in Jin Sakai’s life. Set 300 years after the events of Tsushima in rural 1600s Japan, Yōtei follows Atsu. Jin does not appear, although his legend endures in the world. You do not need to know Tsushima’s story to follow the basic premise of Yōtei. PlayStation’s story details and Sucker Punch’s FAQ describe the setting and standalone premise.

What feels different from Tsushima?
Combat centers on weapon choice
Tsushima’s stance system is replaced by a broader arsenal of weapons that you switch between to answer enemy defenses. That is a meaningful change to the moment-to-moment fighting, though the appeal depends on whether you enjoy adapting your weapon choice during encounters. Tom’s Guide praised the polish and combat, and its review also noted a feeling of familiarity.

A new hero, not a new kind of game
Sony frames Yōtei as an evolution of Tsushima’s design and mythos, rather than a departure from its open-world action-adventure approach. Atsu and the setting provide a fresh story, but the broad structure will be recognizable to returning players. Sony’s overview covers the game’s connection to Tsushima.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Will it feel like more of the same?
That is the main reason a Tsushima owner might hesitate. Yōtei retains a familiar open-world framework, and reviewers point to optional activities such as hot springs, bamboo cuts, and altars as potential sources of repetition. Tom’s Guide found the structure familiar; TechRadar recommends the game to players who value its world and setting, but cautions that similar activities may frustrate those already tired of the formula. These are individual review judgments, not a guarantee of how you will feel.
The counterweight is the presentation: reviewers praised the scenery and polish, alongside the new combat approach. Tom’s Guide called it a “gorgeous and highly polished open-world experience,” while also identifying familiarity as a drawback. Neither review is a controlled, direct comparison with Tsushima, so use them as perspective on Yōtei rather than proof that it is better or worse. Read TechRadar’s review.

No. Ghost of Yōtei is a PS5 game, supports PS5 Pro, and has no PS4 version, according to Sucker Punch’s FAQ. Sony also lists DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers among the features. The available information does not establish that a PS5 Pro is necessary to enjoy the game.
Who should buy it—and who should wait?
- Buy it if you want another cinematic open-world adventure, liked Tsushima’s combat and exploration, and are interested in Atsu’s standalone story and weapon-driven fights.
- Wait for a sale if the familiar open-world activities were your least favorite part of Tsushima, or you expect Yōtei to reinvent the series rather than refine its approach.
- Check the edition first if you want the included extra content: compare the current Complete Edition and standard-edition listings in your territory instead of relying on old US launch prices.
For its intent, Sucker Punch co-founder and studio head Brian Fleming described Yōtei as “a story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance, told through the eyes of a new hero set in the breathtaking edge of Japan.” Sony published the statement on October 2, 2025.
