Gears of War: E-Day is worth considering if you want a new Gears campaign to play solo, on the couch with one other person, or online with up to three friends. The buying case is less certain if you care mainly about campaign quality, pacing, or length: official feature information confirms what the game offers, but does not establish how good or long the campaign is. If you already have Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, check your access before buying; Xbox lists the game as included at launch with those plans. What kind of campaign are you buying?
Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person cover shooter set 14 years before the original Gears of War. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first emerges and the invasion begins. That makes it a prequel origin story rather than a continuation set after the earlier games. The premise may appeal if you want to revisit the series’ characters at the start of the conflict, but the official description does not tell you how the story is written or how the campaign compares in quality with other entries. Xbox’s game listing describes the premise and genre.

The official sources establish that the campaign can be played solo or cooperatively. They do not establish campaign length, pacing, or whether it is worth a particular price on its own. If those are your main criteria, consult current independent reviews rather than treating the feature list as a quality verdict.

The four-player limit applies to the online campaign; it is not the player count for every mode. The sources do not provide independent tests of matchmaking, connection quality, or how the campaign changes when more people join.

Does Game Pass make buying unnecessary?
Xbox lists E-Day as a day-one inclusion with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. If you already subscribe to one of those plans, check the live local store listing and your account’s plan before paying separately. Plan terms and local offers can change. The standard worldwide release is October 6, 2026. Premium Edition early access began October 1, 2026. In a launch-day Xbox Wire post, The Coalition studio head Mike Crump wrote: “Early Access for Gears of War: E-Day is live worldwide beginning today, October 1 at 8:00 a.m. PT / 15:00 UTC. The game launches worldwide on October 6 at 8:00 a.m. PT / 15:00 UTC.” Xbox lists Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11; Xbox Wire also names Steam. The Xbox store lists Standard and Premium editions, with early access and digital bonus content among Premium’s additions. Which platform fits your group?
- Xbox Series X|S: The official materials specify two-player split-screen on console, making this the supported option if you want to share a screen locally.
- Windows PC or Steam: These are listed as launch platforms. The official sources do not specify PC split-screen, so do not assume the console couch co-op feature carries over.
- Online group: The campaign supports up to four players online, subject to the eligible online-multiplayer subscription requirement.
Xbox describes a 4K resolution and up to 60 FPS target across campaign and multiplayer, with a compatible display required. That is a publisher specification, not an independent performance result or a guarantee for every console, PC, or setting. Xbox product page; Xbox Wire launch post

Do the other modes change the value?
They may if you also want multiplayer beyond the campaign. The official developer overview describes Horde Siege as a 12-player, wave-based PvE mode and reports three maps at launch; Xbox also lists Versus PvP. These are separate from the campaign’s four-player online co-op, so do not plan a 12-person campaign session. What about the Collector’s Edition?
The Xbox Series X Collector’s Edition is a separate physical-product option. The Coalition’s announcement says it includes the Premium Edition on disc plus collectibles such as a statue, replica COG tags, a steelbook, and an art print. Availability and quantities vary by region, so check the local listing and stock; do not assume a standard physical-disc edition is available in your market based on this offer. Who should consider buying it?
- It is a good feature fit if you want to play a new Gears campaign solo or with friends, especially if your group matches the two-player local or four-player online options.
- Check Game Pass first if you have Ultimate or PC Game Pass, since Xbox lists the game as included at launch with those plans.
- Wait for independent reviews if your decision depends on campaign quality, pacing, or length; the official materials establish features and premise, not those subjective measures.
- Consider the announced multiplayer modes if PvE Horde Siege or PvP Versus are part of what you want beyond the story.
