For U.S. families, the original Gears of War is rated ESRB Mature 17+. ESRB lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language, so it is not in the category ESRB describes as generally suitable for teens ages 13 and up. Whether an older teen should play depends on the teen, the specific game edition, and your family’s boundaries.
What the ESRB rating means for teens
ESRB’s rating guide says Teen titles are generally suitable for ages 13 and up, while Mature 17+ titles are generally suitable for ages 17 and up. The Mature category may include intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language. These are broad age-category descriptions, not a personalized assessment of a particular teenager.

How graphic is the violence, and how strong is the language?
The ESRB descriptions are more specific than a general warning about combat. They indicate frequent, graphic depictions that may be unsuitable for younger or more sensitive players.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
Gears of War: Reloaded
ESRB’s Reloaded listing describes frequent explosions and cries of pain, large blood-splatter effects, and scenes of dismemberment or decapitation with body parts amid pools of blood. It also notes close-up violent cutscenes and profanity.
Gears 5
The Gears 5 listing describes frenetic combat with explosions, gunfire, cries of pain, and blood-splatter effects. It says some weapons cause aliens to explode into chunks of flesh. Execution-style finishing moves include tearing soldiers apart, cutting off heads, and crushing heads. The listing also identifies strong profanity.
Rank #2
- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
The enemies and setting are fictional science-fiction warfare, but that does not make the described imagery less graphic. Consider whether this level of violence and language is acceptable for the teen in question rather than relying on the fantasy setting alone.
Ratings and notices differ by edition
Check the exact title and platform: different entries can carry different interactive-element notices even when the age category and content descriptors are similar.

Sources: original game, Reloaded, and Gears 5 ESRB entries. ESRB explains that interactive elements do not affect the assigned age rating. “Users Interact” alerts families that users may encounter unfiltered or uncensored user-generated content, including communications or shared media. The in-game-purchases notice on Gears 5 is a separate consideration from its age rating.
Can you reduce blood, gore, or mature dialogue?
Some settings are documented for Gears of War: E-Day. The official E-Day accessibility guide says players can toggle some blood and gore effects and filter strong or mature dialogue and subtitles in English.
Rank #4
- This Certified Refurbished product is tested and certified to look and work like new. The refurbishing process includes functionality testing, basic cleaning, inspection, and repackaging. The product ships with all relevant accessories, a minimum 90-day warranty, and may arrive in a generic box. Only select sellers who maintain a high performance bar may offer Certified Refurbished products on Amazon.com
- Includes full game of the original Gears of War remastered in 1080p.
- Play five campaign chapters never released on console.
- Experience competitive multiplayer in 60FPS with 19 maps and six game modes.
Those controls are documented for E-Day, not as a franchise-wide feature. The sources cited here do not establish that equivalent settings exist in every Gears release. Changing settings also does not change a game’s ESRB rating.
A practical decision check for parents
Before allowing a teen to play, use the rating for the exact edition as a starting point and consider these questions:
Best Value
- 25 Years after Gears of War 3, spurred by a series of strange disappearances, JD Fenix must embrace his father’s legacy and battle a terrifying new enemy
- Never Fight Alone: Enjoy two-player co-op with friends locally via split-screen, over Xbox Live or LAN. Player 2 can select either Kait or Del
- Redefined Cover Gameplay: New close-cover combat moves and combat-knife executions turn each piece of cover into an offensive opportunity
- Brutal New Weapons: An incredible arsenal of new weapons includes the Buzzkill and Dropshot, which can shoot around and over cover, raining destruction from all angles
- Age category: Is the teen within the ESRB category’s stated age range, or are you making an exception based on your own judgment?
- Violence: Are graphic blood effects, dismemberment, decapitation, and execution-style moves acceptable to this teen and your family?
- Language: Are profanity and strong language acceptable?
- Online and purchase features: Does the selected edition carry a Users Interact notice or an In-Game Purchases notice, and what limits or supervision do you want around those features?
For the original game, ESRB says online interactions are not rated; for Reloaded and Gears 5, the Users Interact notice flags possible exposure to user-generated content and communication. These notices are separate from the age rating and should be checked on the exact platform listing.
