Yes. Fortnite’s Battle Royale and Creative modes are free to play, and you do not need to buy a Battle Pass or V-Bucks to access them. V-Bucks are optional in-game currency for eligible cosmetics and passes. Save the World also became free to play on April 16, 2026, according to Epic Games Support.
Which Fortnite modes are free?
Epic says Battle Royale and Creative do not require players to purchase content to play; purchases are optional and provide cosmetic benefits. Save the World has a different purchase history, but Epic says it became free to play on April 16, 2026. Epic’s free-to-play information and its Save the World page describe the current access model.

Epic says all Save the World players can access the full experience. Players who previously bought the mode as Founders retain the ability to earn V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, and Storm Shield Defense missions. Other players earn X-Ray Tickets for llamas and shop items instead.

What do V-Bucks buy?
V-Bucks are Fortnite’s virtual currency. Depending on current availability, players can spend them on Item Shop cosmetics—such as outfits, emotes, pickaxes, and Jam Tracks—and on passes. The specific offers can vary by season, region, and platform. Epic outlines what V-Bucks can purchase.

| Music Pass | 1,200 V-Bucks | Listed by Epic; check the current offer. |
Epic’s Battle Royale Battle Pass pricing page dates the 800 V-Bucks price to March 19, 2026. Pass contents change: a Battle Pass may include outfits, V-Bucks, emotes, and other rewards. Epic also says certain expired Battle Pass items may later appear in the Item Shop at least 18 months after the pass expires. Neither future shop availability nor an individual item’s return is guaranteed by that statement.
V-Bucks are not cash. Epic’s End User License Agreement says virtual credits such as V-Bucks cannot be exchanged for real currency or items outside the Epic ecosystem.

How can you get V-Bucks?
Epic lists several ways to obtain V-Bucks for Battle Royale: buy them directly, redeem a V-Bucks card, subscribe to Fortnite Crew, buy eligible starter or quest packs, or earn them through Free Pass and/or Battle Pass progression. Epic’s V-Bucks options and V-Bucks card information explain these routes; cards are sold by authorized retailers and online.
Every player can access the Free Pass and may earn V-Bucks as they progress through its levels. The paid Battle Pass is optional. The number of V-Bucks available through a pass depends on its current rewards, so check the active season rather than assuming free progression will cover a particular purchase.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Avoid third-party “free V-Bucks” offers. Epic warns about suspicious external offers and says genuine offers appear on official Epic websites, social channels, or the Epic Games Store. See Epic’s guidance on scams and free V-Bucks offers.
Should you spend V-Bucks on a pass or shop items?
There is no universally better value: Epic’s listings establish what may be purchased, not which option is worthwhile for a particular player. Decide based on the items you actually want and how you play.

- Choose a pass if it currently includes rewards you want and you expect to progress far enough to claim them.
- Choose an Item Shop cosmetic if you prefer a specific available item over the current pass rewards. Shop offers can rotate, so verify availability in-game.
- Spend nothing if neither option appeals to you; Battle Royale and Creative remain playable without purchases.
Will purchased V-Bucks work across platforms?
Epic says V-Bucks bought with Epic account balance are available across platforms except Nintendo, which does not support Fortnite Shared Wallet. Items bought with V-Bucks can still appear in the Locker across platforms connected to the Epic account. Before purchasing, confirm you are signed in to the intended Epic account and check the platform’s storefront rules. Epic’s Shared Wallet explanation describes the platform exception.
