Ethernet is usually the more reliable choice for a stationary TV or streaming device when Wi-Fi is weak, inconsistent, or affected by interference. But if Wi-Fi already delivers a stable connection fast enough for your stream, switching to Ethernet may not make the picture look better. Neither option can fix congestion or a speed problem farther along the route to the streaming service.
When Ethernet is better for streaming
A wired connection avoids the wireless link between your router and streaming device. That can help when the device is far from the router, walls obstruct the signal, nearby wireless devices cause interference, or other activity makes the Wi-Fi connection inconsistent. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, says a wired connection is “usually faster and more reliable” and recommends connecting stationary devices by Ethernet when they have a socket: Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance.
Ethernet is most useful when the wireless segment is the weak link. If your TV is in a fixed location and you can run a cable from the router to it, try a direct connection before replacing network equipment.
When Wi-Fi is good enough
Wi-Fi can stream well when it is stable in the device’s actual room and has enough available throughput for the service and picture quality you want. If playback is smooth and the connection meets the service’s requirements, the available evidence does not establish that changing to Ethernet will produce a visible improvement in picture quality.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 3 Mbps for HD 720p, 5 Mbps for FHD 1080p, and 15 Mbps for UHD 4K. These are Netflix’s service recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection method will perform reliably in your home: Netflix’s internet connection speed recommendations.
What Ethernet cannot fix
Streaming traffic travels beyond your home network: through the internet provider’s network and other parts of the route to the service. Netflix says congestion anywhere along that path can affect playback, as can a weak home connection and other devices using it. Ethernet can improve the connection between your router and device, but it cannot correct an upstream service or provider problem, a public-network block, or a fault with the streaming device.

- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That distinction matters if buffering continues after you connect by cable. A wired link that is stable in the room can still be limited by the internet plan, provider congestion, or another issue outside the home network.
How to choose for your setup
| Factor | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Reliability in the viewing room | Often preferable if Wi-Fi is weak or inconsistent and the device can be cabled. | Works well if the signal is stable where the device is used. |
| Distance and obstacles | A cable avoids wireless signal loss from distance and walls, but must reach the device. | Distance and walls can weaken performance. |
| Interference and shared activity | Avoids wireless interference on the device-to-router link. | Other wireless devices and network activity can affect performance. |
| Mobility and installation | Best suited to a stationary device; cable routing may be inconvenient. | Convenient where running a cable is impractical, and supports movable devices. |
| Device compatibility | Requires a built-in Ethernet port or a compatible adapter. | Requires supported Wi-Fi; check the device’s specifications. |
Check the streaming device before buying an adapter. Google says supported Chromecast and Google TV Streamer devices can use an Ethernet adapter for a direct wired connection, but compatibility depends on the exact model: Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Streamer connection troubleshooting.

What to try if streaming buffers
- Check the service’s speed guidance. Compare the connection with the streaming service’s recommendation for the resolution you want. Netflix’s figures are listed above.
- Improve Wi-Fi placement. Move the router and streaming device closer together, put the router in an open location, and keep it away from other wireless devices where practical. Ofcom identifies distance, walls, interference, and the router and device themselves as factors in Wi-Fi performance.
- Try Ethernet if the device supports it. Connect a stationary TV or streamer directly to the router, using a compatible adapter only if the manufacturer supports one for that exact model.
- Consider better wireless coverage if cabling is impractical. A mesh system may help extend coverage to a weak-signal room; it will not fix a problem with the internet provider or streaming service.
- Contact your internet provider if the issue persists. Netflix recommends contacting the ISP when troubleshooting does not resolve buffering. Tell support whether the device is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, as that helps distinguish a home wireless problem from other possible causes. See Netflix’s guidance for slow loading or repeated buffering.
Does Ethernet make the picture quality better?
Not automatically. Ethernet can make playback more dependable when Wi-Fi is the limiting link, which may prevent buffering or drops in quality. But when both connections are already stable and fast enough for the stream, changing from Wi-Fi to Ethernet is not established to improve the visible picture. The practical test is whether the wired connection resolves a problem in your setup.
