Yes—on Windows, Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) requires kernel-level access. Epic says it uses that access to help detect cheats. In Epic’s documented EOS setup, its Windows service starts with a protected game and stops when the game exits. Linux through Wine or Proton is a separate, developer-enabled configuration: Epic documents a Linux client module, but its component list does not describe a Linux kernel driver.
What does “kernel level” mean?
Windows separates ordinary applications from core operating-system code. Applications usually run in user mode, in isolated processes. Kernel-mode code—including many drivers—has broader access. Microsoft explains that a kernel-mode driver is not isolated from other drivers or the operating system, so a fault can affect system data or crash Windows. That is a general description of kernel-mode drivers, not a finding about EAC’s code quality.
In this context, “kernel level” describes the privilege EAC uses on Windows. It does not, by itself, tell you whether EAC runs continuously, what data it collects, or how effective it is at detecting cheats.
When does EAC run on Windows?
Epic’s EOS documentation describes a service-based Windows setup. The documented files are EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exe (installer), start_protected_game.exe (bootstrapper), and EasyAntiCheat_EOS.exe (service executable that initializes other components).

According to Epic, the service is installed with the game; starting a protected game launches it, and exiting the game stops it. Epic also says later game starts do not require administrator rights. For this documented EOS lifecycle, EAC runs with the protected game session; the documentation does not describe it as an always-on-at-boot service. Details may vary with integration and SDK version.
Does Linux or Steam Deck support mean EAC has a Linux kernel driver?
No such conclusion follows from compatibility alone. Epic documents a separate Linux path for Windows games running through Wine or Proton. Developers must use the required SDK version and enable the Linux client module; support is therefore a game developer’s choice, not a guarantee for every EAC-protected game.

Epic’s documented Linux distribution includes a start_protected_game bootstrapper and the Linux client module. The component list reviewed does not describe a Linux kernel driver. That is a narrower statement than saying the Linux path is entirely user-mode or uses no privileged mechanisms: Epic’s documentation cited here does not establish that.
Can EAC conflict with Windows security features?
Epic’s support article about a Windows 11 driver-loading error explains that certain EAC drivers are currently incompatible with Kernel-mode Hardware-enforced Stack Protection. This identifies a compatibility issue affecting certain drivers, not every EAC installation or every Windows system. It is not evidence that the security feature should be disabled; follow current guidance from the game publisher and Windows support documentation for the specific error.

What to keep in mind
- Windows: Epic explicitly says EAC requires kernel-level access to help detect cheats.
- Runtime: Epic’s EOS documentation says its Windows service starts with a protected game and stops when that game exits.
- Linux/Proton: Support requires the developer to enable the Linux client module; the documented Linux component list does not name a kernel driver.
- Compatibility: Epic documents a Windows security-feature issue for certain EAC drivers, not a universal failure.
