DreamHost DreamCompute can suit developers who want an unmanaged Linux cloud server, root access, and OpenStack-based control—but it is not a universally ideal choice. You manage the server yourself, DreamHost’s FAQ places the service in the United States, and deleted instance or volume data is not recoverable unless you have copied it elsewhere or made a snapshot. Whether it fits depends on your preferred level of control, workload, data-location needs, and backup plan.

What DreamHost means by cloud hosting

DreamHost’s cloud service for developers is DreamCompute. It is built on OpenStack: virtual servers run on KVM, networking uses OpenStack Neutron, and block storage uses Ceph through Cinder. You can manage compute, networking, storage, and snapshots in the Horizon dashboard or through the OpenStack CLI and APIs. Those tools enable infrastructure control and automation; they do not, by themselves, establish how fast or easy the service will be for a particular application. DreamHost’s DreamCompute overview describes the service.

DreamCompute is not the same as ordinary shared hosting, DreamPress managed WordPress hosting, or DreamHost’s VPS products. It is an infrastructure-level service: you choose and operate the software environment on the virtual machine rather than receiving a fully managed application stack.

What DreamCompute costs

DreamHost’s billing article, last updated July 8, 2026, says each instance is billed for up to 600 hours (25 days) per month, with its charge capped at the listed maximum monthly price. The following are the published rates in that article; check DreamHost’s DreamCompute billing page for current prices and terms.

Flavor Memory vCPUs Hourly rate Maximum monthly price per instance
gp1.semisonic 512 MB 1 $0.0075 $4.50
gp1.subsonic 1 GB 1 $0.01 $6.00
gp1.supersonic 2 GB 1 $0.02 $12.00
gp1.lightspeed 4 GB 2 $0.04 $24.00
gp1.warpspeed 8 GB 4 $0.08 $48.00
gp1.hyperspeed 16 GB 8 $0.16 $96.00

Each account includes 100 GB of block storage. DreamHost lists additional 100 GB chunks in US-East 2 at $10 per month per chunk, calculated on the total monthly allotment rather than actual storage used. The billing article says bandwidth is currently free, but reserves the right to change that. Treat both storage and bandwidth terms as provider-published details that may change.

What developers need to manage

DreamCompute is fully unmanaged. Root or sudo control lets you configure the operating system and application stack, but it also leaves server configuration, maintenance, and security operations to you. DreamHost lists Linux distributions rather than Windows, and DreamCompute does not include email hosting. It is a better conceptual fit for someone who wants to administer a Linux server than for someone looking for a managed application or email service. DreamHost’s DreamCompute FAQ covers the service’s operating and location details.

OpenStack APIs and the CLI can help automate provisioning and infrastructure changes. That flexibility is useful when your workflow already uses OpenStack or you want to manage virtual compute, networks, storage, and snapshots directly. It also means the service should be assessed as infrastructure to operate, not as proof that a deployment will be simpler than a managed alternative.

Check workload size, location, and recovery needs

Match the instance to the workload

The published flavors range from 512 MB of memory and one vCPU to 16 GB and eight vCPUs. Compare those limits with the needs of your application, database, background jobs, and development tools. DreamHost says you can scale vertically by increasing VM resources or horizontally by adding VMs. The published flavor list does not establish performance under your workload, so do not treat a resource tier as a performance guarantee.

Confirm data-location and latency requirements

DreamHost’s FAQ identifies Ashburn, Virginia, and says DreamCompute cloud services are in the United States. That may work for projects whose users and data requirements align with US infrastructure; it may not meet a requirement for another country or region. Confirm the current available locations and your compliance requirements before deployment.

Plan for backups before deleting anything

DreamHost says a deleted instance or volume cannot be recovered if its data was not copied elsewhere or preserved in an image-based snapshot first. Build backup and restore steps into the deployment plan, and verify that snapshots or external copies contain the data you need before deleting a resource.

DreamCompute versus DreamHost VPS options

The product names are easy to conflate, but DreamCompute and VPS hosting are distinct choices. DreamHost’s VPS comparison says its VPS provides a full-root Linux environment that customers configure, maintain, and secure, while Managed VPS is managed by DreamHost and does not provide root access. DreamCompute, in turn, is the OpenStack-based cloud service described above. See DreamHost’s VPS comparison for its current distinctions.

DreamHost also announced a separate Self-Managed VPS on June 18, 2026. The company said its plans start at $5.99 per month with NVMe SSD storage and unmetered bandwidth across tiers, and described root access, choice of runtime, framework, and database, plus an app library including n8n, OpenClaw, PostgreSQL, Supabase, Dokploy, and GitLab CE. Those are vendor statements about the VPS product, not DreamCompute specifications or independent performance findings. Check the live plan details before comparing cost or included resources. DreamHost’s announcement describes that launch.

Consideration DreamCompute Other DreamHost options
Control and operations Unmanaged cloud infrastructure; you operate the guest environment. VPS options differ: DreamHost says VPS customers configure, maintain, and secure the server; Managed VPS is managed and does not provide root access.
Automation and infrastructure OpenStack Horizon, CLI, and APIs for compute, networking, storage, and snapshots. The supplied product descriptions do not establish equivalent OpenStack management for VPS options.
Pricing information cited here DreamCompute flavors have hourly rates and per-instance monthly caps; extra 100 GB storage chunks in US-East 2 are listed at $10/month. DreamHost’s June 18, 2026 announcement states that Self-Managed VPS starts at $5.99/month; this is a separate product and the announcement is not an independent pricing check.

How to decide if DreamCompute fits

  • Choose it for consideration if you want an unmanaged Linux environment, root-level control, OpenStack tooling, and the ability to automate infrastructure through APIs or the CLI.
  • Look elsewhere within DreamHost’s range if you want DreamHost to manage the server software and security operations; Managed VPS is the relevant contrast, though it does not provide root access.
  • Compare it with Self-Managed VPS if you want root control but prefer a VPS product. Verify live pricing, resource allocations, and included features rather than assuming the two products are interchangeable.
  • Pause before committing if you require Windows, non-US infrastructure, included email hosting, or a recovery process that does not depend on backups and snapshots you arrange.

Before launch, estimate the resources your application needs, include block storage in the cost calculation, confirm current bandwidth and region terms, and test your backup-and-restore process. DreamCompute’s published monthly caps make per-instance compute charges easier to bound, but the cap does not settle every cost or operational question for a project.
