Usually, only if you want to replay the game in one of its new graphics modes and are comfortable starting over. Square Enix says the Switch 2 edition has the same game content as the Switch version, but adds selectable performance and image-quality modes. Switch-version saves cannot transfer, so an active playthrough is the biggest reason to wait.
What the Switch 2 edition adds
Square Enix lists two display modes for the Switch 2 edition: Performance Priority Mode targets 1080p at 60fps, while Quality Priority Mode targets 1440p at 30fps. These are publisher-stated specifications, not independent measurements of performance or frame-rate stability. The modes let you choose whether to prioritize frame rate or image quality. See Square Enix’s official FAQ.
The publisher says the game content is the same as on Switch. The Switch 2 edition therefore is not a reason to buy again for new story content. The Definitive Edition features—including additional party-member story chapters, Japanese voices and additional English voices, 3D/2D play, and an orchestral score—are not new additions over the Switch version. Nintendo’s UK listing describes the Switch 2 product as a distinct edition compatible only with Nintendo Switch 2.

No. Square Enix says Switch-version save data cannot transfer to the Switch 2 edition; its product page also says save data from the Switch retail version cannot be carried over. The FAQ and product page address the limitation.
#1 Best Overall
- The eleventh installment in the fabled DRAGON QUEST series, taking the tale of the legendary heroes right back to its origins, comes to Nintendo Switch 2!
- What does it mean to be a hero? A young lad from a country village sets out to find the answer to this question, embarking on an epic adventure that will lead him to uncover the secrets that lie at the heart of his world.
- DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 contains all of the content added in the original Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch, including: new story chapters where the party members take center stage, Japanese voices and additional English voices, the ability to switch between 3D and 2D mode, and an orchestral score.
- This new edition for Nintendo Switch 2 also introduces new optimization modes, allowing you to prioritize graphics or performance.
- GAME-KEY CARD. 30 GB - Full game download via internet required.
If you are partway through the Switch game and want to continue that exact playthrough, finish it on Switch before considering the new edition. Treat a Switch 2 purchase as a separate playthrough, not an upgrade that picks up where you left off.
Who should buy it again?
Consider buying the Switch 2 edition if
- You want to replay the game and value choosing between the publisher-stated 1080p/60fps and 1440p/30fps modes.
- You are happy to begin a new save rather than continue your Switch playthrough.
- The price in your region feels worthwhile for those mode options, given that the game content is otherwise the same.
Keep playing the Switch version if
- You are invested in a current save and do not want to restart.
- You are already satisfied with the Switch edition and do not particularly value the new mode choices.
- The local price is too high for a separate playthrough with the same game content.
Check your regional price before deciding
Square Enix announced a September 24, 2026 release in Japan at a suggested retail price of ¥5,478 including tax. That is a Japan-specific suggested price, not a US, UK, or other regional price. The announcement also says the package includes a special sleeve. Read Square Enix’s Japanese announcement.

- Perfectly balanced turn-based battles and an impressive scope of activities as you explore a massive, gorgeous world
- The option for fully orchestrated field and battle tunes, and the ability to change between HD and retro-inspired 16-bit visuals.
- Bonus characters stories included in the Definitive Edition
- Follow the elaborate tale of The Luminary branded as “Darkspawn” and assemble a charismatic cast of loyal companions whose designs are inspired by the famed Akira Toriyama
- Capture your favourite gameplay moments with Photo Mode
Check your local Nintendo or retail store for the price where you live; no other regional price is established here. Compare that amount with the value you place on replaying the game in a selected mode, and factor in the lost save continuity. The Switch 2 edition is a separate product, not a save-compatible upgrade.
