Consider buying Revelations if you want its extra campaign and combat content, or plan to play Slaughter Mode; buy the base game alone if you only want the original campaign. As of October 4, 2026, Slaughter Mode is announced for November and is reported to require Revelations, but it is not yet available and no exact release day has been confirmed. That makes it a reason to consider the DLC—not a mode you can play today.
What you need to buy for each experience
DOOM: The Dark Ages is available as a base game, with Revelations sold either in certain editions or separately. Bethesda’s official buy page lists these options:

If you already own the base game, check whether your edition includes Revelations before purchasing the DLC or upgrade. Bethesda identifies Revelations as an add-on that requires the base game. Edition availability and entitlements can vary by store, so verify the listing for your platform.

Xbox Wire’s July 1, 2026 preview describes a new story campaign, arenas, and additional Ripatorium content. Game Director Hugo Martin estimated the expansion at 10–12 hours; that is a pre-release estimate reported by Xbox Wire, not a guaranteed playtime or an independently timed result. The preview characterizes the content as roughly 60% story campaign and 40% endgame, including a hub, secrets, challenges, puzzles, an uber boss, and master arenas. The Chain Spear changes combat
At the start of the campaign, the Chain Spear replaces the shield. The preview describes multiple attack types and movement options, including a grapple-like pull; later, players can swap it with the shield. Existing difficulty sliders remain available, according to Xbox Wire. If you want a new combat tool and a campaign built around it, that is a more concrete reason to buy Revelations than Slaughter Mode alone.

Does Slaughter Mode require Revelations?
Contemporary reporting says yes: access to Slaughter Mode requires ownership of Revelations, not just the base game. The mode was announced as a free update planned for November 2026. As of October 4, the cited report gives no exact release day, and Bethesda’s official DLC page confirms Revelations but does not mention Slaughter Mode. Treat the requirement and schedule as announced plans, not as a guarantee that the mode is already playable. TrueAchievements’ October 2 report covers the announcement; a Reddit post reproducing details from the stream provides secondary corroboration.
The announced format is an endless single-player challenge: fight escalating demon waves across multiple arenas, chase personal round or score records, unlock cosmetic rewards, and return for weekly challenges. If that loop is the main reason you are considering the game, Revelations is the reported access requirement—but you would be buying ahead of the announced November launch rather than for immediate access.

Who should buy Revelations—and who can wait?
Consider Revelations if you want the expansion itself
- You want another campaign and the Chain Spear’s different combat options.
- You are interested in the added arenas, endgame activities, or Ripatorium content.
- You intend to play Slaughter Mode and accept that its November launch is announced but its exact date and availability are not confirmed here.
Choose the base game or wait if your interest is narrower
- You only want the original DOOM: The Dark Ages campaign.
- You are unsure whether the expansion’s combat and endgame activities appeal to you.
- You would rather decide on Slaughter Mode after it launches and its details can be assessed in practice.
