Deadlock costs nothing to play, but it is not open to everyone. As of early October 2026, Valve’s Steam listing limits access to friend invites from existing playtesters, and the game has no announced release date. To get in, you need an invite from someone who already has access. You should never pay for one.
Is Deadlock free to play?
Deadlock is free to access through its playtest, but a free price does not mean the game is open to the public. Valve’s Deadlock Steam page describes the game as in early development and states: “Access to Deadlock is currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters.” The Steam listing also shows “To be announced” where a release date would appear.

The phrase “Free to Play” can be misleading here. Steam’s own definition of free-to-play, set out in Valve’s Steam Support article on free-to-play games, describes titles that can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card. Deadlock’s listing applies a separate invite requirement on top of that, so a tag or price label alone does not tell you whether you can start playing today.
Can you play Deadlock without an invite?
Not at the moment. Valve’s current listing does not offer a public sign-up, a open beta button, or a store purchase path that bypasses the invite gate. If a page or seller says otherwise, it is not reflecting Valve’s stated access rules.

How to get a Deadlock invite
Access runs through existing playtesters. Follow these steps:
- Open the official Deadlock Steam page and confirm the access notice is still there. The notice is the authoritative status, and it may change.
- Ask a Steam friend who already has Deadlock playtest access to send you an invite. Your friend needs to have the playtest access themselves; you cannot request one from Valve through this page.
- Accept the invite through Steam. If it does not show up right away, check your Steam account’s playtest invitations and your library.
- If you have no playtester friends, you can only wait for the listing to announce broader access. Valve has not published an invite delivery time, a waiting list, or an acceptance rate for this game.
Warning signs of invite scams
- Sellers asking money for a Deadlock key or invite. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says Steam Playtest is free for customers, and developers should not charge customers for access.
- Offers to “guarantee” an invite or a fixed delivery time. No such guarantee has been published by Valve.
- Requests for your Steam login details in exchange for access. Valve’s listing does not involve sharing account credentials.
Is Deadlock released yet?
No. The Steam page lists the game as in early development, with temporary art and experimental gameplay. Valve has not announced a release date. A PC Gamer report by Tyler Colp, dated September 30, 2026, on Valve’s development update says the update was not a sign of an imminent public release, and that core-game work is still underway.

What Valve has said about development
In the development update, as quoted by PC Gamer, Valve explained its reasoning for early access by playtest:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“We think building a multiplayer game is very hard and risky, and the best way to minimize that risk [is] to make sure that we are able to have it in players’ hands from an early state to help us shape it and tell us what is fun and what isn’t.”
Valve also said progression and hero and hideout customization are features it expects to change based on feedback before full release. Experimental modes and item changes are also tied to playtesting. PC Gamer does not name an individual speaker, so these statements should be attributed to Valve’s development update.
System requirements
The Steam listing requires a 64-bit processor and operating system. Operating system, processor, and graphics details are still listed as “To be announced,” so no specific PC configuration has been published as required for playtest access. Check the Steam page for updates before you assume your hardware is supported.

What to do next
If a playtester invites you, accept it through Steam and check your library. If not, watch the official Steam listing for changes to the access notice or a release date. Those two places are the only sources that can confirm when access expands.
