Yes. Cross-browser testing still matters because browser support has improved, but it has not eliminated differences in how real websites work across browsers, devices, and assistive technologies. The practical approach is targeted testing: choose the browsers and devices your audience uses, then focus effort on the features and failures that matter most.
Why cross-browser testing still matters
A page can behave differently across browsers because support for a web feature varies, an implementation has a browser-specific bug, or a device imposes different constraints. Accessibility can also diverge: keyboard interaction or screen-reader behavior that works in one setup may not work as expected in another. MDN defines cross-browser testing as checking that a website works across browsers and devices, and recommends starting with stable browsers, basic keyboard and screen-reader checks, and a mobile platform before broadening coverage to match the audience (MDN: Introduction to cross-browser testing).
Compatibility is improving, but it is not a solved problem. WebKit reported that the overall pass rate for Interop 2025’s selected tests rose from 29% at the start of 2025 to 97% by year end. Those figures describe that project’s selected test set—not the share of websites that work everywhere (WebKit, February 6, 2026). WebKit’s Interop 2026 announcement still identifies work involving ESM module loading, the timing of scroll events relative to animation events, and user-select. In that context, WebKit describes compatibility as whether a real-world site works correctly in a particular browser (WebKit: Announcing Interop 2026).
Which browsers and devices should you test?
There is no useful universal matrix for every site. Select targets from product requirements and evidence about your users, then agree with stakeholders on the browser and device range you intend to support. MDN notes that testing every possible combination is impractical and recommends basing choices on the audience and project needs (MDN: Strategies for carrying out testing).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start with your users. Use your site analytics or user research to identify commonly used browsers, operating systems, and device types. Browser popularity varies by geography, date, and measurement method, so do not substitute a global share figure for your own audience evidence.
- Write down the support commitment. Agree which browsers and devices are in scope, including any business or contractual requirements. Explain the trade-off: broader coverage costs more, while exhaustive coverage is not feasible.
- Set a sensible baseline. Begin with stable desktop browsers, at least one mobile platform, and basic keyboard and screen-reader checks. Add targets where the audience, a key feature, or the consequence of failure justifies them.
- Prioritize by risk. For each candidate, consider audience reach, operating system and device coverage, browser engine, the features your product depends on, accessibility requirements, and the harm caused if a flow breaks.
- Revisit the matrix. Review it when audience evidence, supported features, browser releases, or product commitments change. A test matrix is a maintained decision, not a once-and-for-all list.
Prefer real devices where feasible, particularly for mobile behavior. If a physical test lab is not practical, emulators and virtual machines can extend coverage, but an emulated device is not a blanket guarantee of behavior on every physical device. MDN discusses both physical-device testing and these alternatives in its testing strategies guidance (MDN: testing strategies).
How automation and Baseline fit into the plan
Use automation for repeatable checks
Playwright can run browser workflows across Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox. It also documents branded Chrome and Microsoft Edge options, plus emulated tablet and mobile devices. That makes it useful for repeating important flows across engines and form factors; Playwright recommends keeping the tooling current so tests can catch issues in newer browser versions (Playwright: Browsers).

Automation does not decide which users matter, and emulation does not reproduce every physical-device condition. Keep manual investigation and real-device checks where they add meaningful coverage, especially for interaction and accessibility.
Use Baseline as a feature-support signal
MDN Baseline summarizes feature support across Safari on iOS and macOS, Chrome on Android and desktop, Edge desktop, and Firefox on Android and desktop. Its “widely available” label means a feature has consistent support in each Baseline browser for at least 2.5 years (MDN: Baseline compatibility).

That signal can help teams assess whether a web platform feature is broadly established, but it is not a test result for your site. Baseline does not establish behavior in older devices or browsers it does not cover, and it does not replace accessibility, usability, performance, security, or assistive-technology testing.
Where screenshots help—and where they do not
Comparing screenshots can reveal layout shifts, clipped content, and obvious visual regressions across selected browsers or viewports. A screenshot is evidence about one rendered state, not proof that a site works: it cannot by itself establish that a form submits, keyboard focus is usable, a screen reader announces controls correctly, or performance and security are acceptable.

A practical cross-browser checklist
- Choose supported browsers and devices from audience evidence and product requirements.
- Test critical user journeys across the selected browser engines, not only the home page.
- Check keyboard navigation and screen-reader basics alongside visual output.
- Include mobile coverage and use physical devices when practical.
- Use automation for repeatable checks; use screenshots for visual comparison, not as a substitute for behavior testing.
- Reassess the matrix as your audience, features, and browser support commitments change.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Testing every imaginable combination: it consumes effort without a realistic endpoint. Agree a support range and expand it according to user reach and risk.
- Assuming one engine or browser represents all others: run important flows across the engines in your chosen matrix.
- Treating a high compatibility score as universal proof: Interop results apply to their selected tests, not every site or browser situation.
- Relying on screenshots alone: also validate interaction, accessibility, performance, and security using appropriate checks.
- Treating emulation as a physical-device guarantee: use real devices where the behavior or failure cost warrants them.
