Carrie is generally a better fit for mature teens than for children. For Brian De Palma’s 1976 film, Common Sense Media recommends ages 15+, while the U.S. Motion Picture Association (MPA) record lists an R rating. Those are different kinds of guidance, not a universal age rule. The 2013 remake has its own Common Sense Media recommendation: 17+.

Which Carrie film are you considering?

The title refers to more than one film. This guide distinguishes Brian De Palma’s 1976 original from Kimberly Peirce’s 2013 adaptation; their content and age recommendations differ. The 1976 film’s BBFC record covers that version, while the 2013 recommendation comes from a separate Common Sense Media parent guide.

How old should you be to watch the 1976 Carrie?

Common Sense Media recommends Carrie (1976) for ages 15+. Its guide, attributed to Teresa Talerico, was updated February 21, 2026. In the United States, the MPA record lists the film as R, with a year-rated entry of 1976. An R rating is a U.S. classification, while 15+ is an editorial recommendation from Common Sense Media; neither determines what is right for every child.

In the United Kingdom, the BBFC record describes the film as containing strong horror, violence, bloody images, domestic abuse, and nudity. The reviewed record does not establish a UK age certificate for the original cinema entry, so its content descriptors should not be mistaken for one. For an explanation of how BBFC content advice helps families assess films, see the BBFC’s classification advice.

How violent and scary is Carrie?

1976 original: bullying, abuse, and a prom massacre

Common Sense Media describes the original’s violence and scariness as “a lot.” The horror builds from persistent cruelty at school and abuse at home to Carrie’s telekinetic attack at prom. Her mother hits and confines her; both mother and daughter try to kill one another. Students bully or hit classmates, and Carrie destroys the school gym and kills people. Deaths include electrocution, a fiery car wreck, and impalement with knives and kitchen utensils.

The BBFC’s detailed advice also describes a telekinetic attack that skewers a person through the hands and torso with sharp implements, as well as a teenager abused by her mother and later attacked with a knife. It notes a boyfriend repeatedly slapping his girlfriend, sustained upsetting school bullying, and the implication that a pig is killed off-screen.

2013 remake: bloodier violence, according to Common Sense Media

Common Sense Media characterizes the remake’s violent sequences as bloodier than those in the 1976 film. Its guide flags impalement, burning, stabbing, bludgeoning, physical and emotional abuse by Carrie’s mother, and a pig’s throat being cut. The bullying prank involves pouring pig’s blood over Carrie, and the menstruation humiliation is recorded or photographed.

The distress may not come from gore alone. Repeated humiliation, cruelty from peers, abuse by a caregiver, and the story’s turn toward revenge can be unsettling even for a viewer who is comfortable with older or stylized horror.

What other content should parents know about?

1976 film

  • Nudity and sexual content: prolonged locker-room nudity, a teen shown masturbating in the shower, and implied oral sex.
  • Menstruation and bullying: Carrie’s first-period scene includes visible blood; classmates throw tampons and sanitary napkins at her.
  • Language and alcohol: profanity, teens drinking beer, and an adult drinking a cocktail.

2013 film

  • Nudity and sexual content: no locker-room nudity is reported in the guide, but girls appear in towels or underwear; it also flags a teen sex scene and passionate kissing.
  • Menstruation and bullying: Carrie is humiliated with pig’s blood, and the prank is recorded or photographed.
  • Language and alcohol: strong profanity and underage drinking.

How do the two versions compare?

The age recommendations and content descriptions are from separate Common Sense Media guides; the 1976 U.S. rating is listed by the MPA. The BBFC supplies UK content advice for the 1976 film. These systems are not interchangeable: consider both the version and the content most likely to affect your child.

What should parents consider before pressing play?

Use the warnings that matter most to your child, rather than treating an age number as a guarantee. If menstruation-related humiliation, domestic abuse, nudity, implied sex, or a violent climax is likely to upset them, preview those parts or choose a different film. For the 2013 version, use its separate 17+ recommendation and warnings rather than applying the original’s guidance.
