Yes. You can view Area 51 on Google Maps by entering 37.24804, -115.800155 and switching to satellite imagery. That coordinate is a suggested map point—not a surveyed boundary—and seeing the site on a map does not make it accessible to the public.
How to find Area 51 on Google Maps
- Open Google Maps.
- Enter
37.24804, -115.800155in the search box and submit it. A travel guide recommends these coordinates for viewing the area in Google Maps satellite imagery: Travel + Leisure’s Area 51 guide. - Choose the satellite map layer if the map is not already showing overhead imagery.
The coordinates take you to a point in the Groom Lake area. They should not be treated as the surveyed edge of the installation. Travel Nevada’s Area 51 page also says the site can be found on a map and includes an embedded Google map.
Can you see Area 51 on Google Maps?
You can view overhead imagery of the area. Google describes Google Earth as providing satellite imagery worldwide, but that does not mean the imagery is live or establish when the image of Area 51 was captured. Satellite imagery is an overhead view, not a street-level view or a way to enter the site. See Google Earth’s imagery overview.

Where is Area 51?
Area 51 is associated with Groom Lake in southern Nevada, north of Las Vegas, within the Nevada Test and Training Range. The CIA’s historical account identifies the site at Groom Lake as the place commonly called Area 51. It also notes that “Area 51” and “Watertown” were used as names, with Groom Lake referring to the dry lakebed nearby. The CIA’s history of Area 51 provides that context.
Does a map let you visit Area 51?
No. Travel Nevada describes the installation as inaccessible to the public and warns visitors not to approach its perimeter. The map location is useful for viewing and understanding the geography, not as an invitation or route to enter restricted land. Travel Nevada’s visitor information explains the access restriction.

What is documented about Area 51?
Official CIA histories describe Area 51 as a site for testing and pilot training connected to the U-2 and A-12 OXCART reconnaissance aircraft programs. The CIA recounts that the first U-2 became airborne unintentionally during a high-speed taxi test at Groom Lake on August 1, 1955; the first official test flight followed a few days later. Its account of the program history and the site’s names is available in the CIA’s Area 51 history.
Stories about extraterrestrial visitors are not established by these historical records. The documented aviation testing provides a grounded explanation for the site’s secrecy and its place in public imagination; it does not verify alien claims.
