It can be, but there is no universal winner: compare the laptop’s measured electricity use, a fair share of its purchase cost and any added internet or reliability expense with the VPS’s compute charge plus outbound bandwidth and other fees. The answer also depends on whether the setup only sends an already encoded video or must encode video in real time.

Calculate both options over the same 30 days

A continuously powered device running for 30 days uses average watts × 0.72 kilowatt-hours. Multiply that result by your electricity price per kWh. This is a formula, not a typical laptop power measurement: measure the actual laptop at the wall while it performs the intended streaming workload. A plug-in electricity meter can help; a processor’s TDP or the wattage printed on a power adapter is not a substitute for measured system draw.

For the laptop, add electricity, a reasonable monthly share of the used laptop’s purchase price, and any internet or reliability costs that are incremental to this setup. For the VPS, add the monthly compute plan, bandwidth overage, storage and any other charges relevant to your configuration. Compare the resulting totals in the same currency and for the same 30-day period.

Example calculation using your own measurements

If your meter reads W average watts and your electricity costs P per kWh, estimated monthly electricity is W × 0.72 × P. To include a purchase cost L spread over N months, add L ÷ N. These are estimates: actual draw, service life and local tariffs vary. Include the full purchase cost if you would not otherwise buy the laptop, and do not treat its cost as zero merely because it is already owned.

Include the VPS bandwidth bill

A 24/7 stream sends data continuously. For a 30-day month, estimate decimal bytes before protocol overhead with Mbps × 106 bits/s × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. At 5 Mbps, that is about 1.62 TB decimal, or 1.47 TiB. At 6 Mbps, it is about 1.94 TB decimal, or 1.76 TiB. Decimal TB and binary TiB/GiB are different units; compare a transfer allowance and usage in the same units.

DigitalOcean currently lists these Basic Droplet prices and included transfer allowances; its additional outbound transfer rate is $0.01/GiB. These are provider list prices, not a promise that the plan can encode your video. DigitalOcean Droplet pricing and its bandwidth billing documentation provide the terms to check before choosing a plan.

DigitalOcean Basic Droplet Monthly list price Included transfer
Basic plan $4/month 500 GiB
Basic plan $6/month 1,000 GiB
Basic plan $12/month 2,000 GiB

The 5 Mbps estimate of roughly 1.47 TiB is above 500 GiB and below 2,000 GiB before overhead. That means the lowest advertised compute price alone is not a reliable estimate of the full VPS bill. Estimate the bill against the provider’s actual transfer accounting, overage policy and your stream’s bitrate; recheck prices and terms because they can change.

Decide whether the stream needs live encoding

Sending a prerecorded, already encoded file is a different workload from capturing and encoding video in real time. Do not assume a low-cost VPS can encode a stream simply because it can transmit data. Live encoding adds a compute requirement; the server or laptop must be capable of the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate while maintaining a stable broadcast. A pre-encoded file avoids that encoding workload, though the machine still has to read and send the stream.

YouTube supports software encoders on computers as well as hardware encoders. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended H.264 bitrate ranges include 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3–8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Choose settings your encoder and connection can sustain, then check YouTube’s live encoder guidance for the exact resolution and frame rate you plan to use: YouTube encoder settings.

YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Test the real workload and monitor for dropped frames, unstable upload or audio problems rather than relying on a machine’s specification alone.

Account for uptime, recovery and maintenance

A laptop at home depends on power, the home internet connection, the device staying awake and the encoder continuing to run. A VPS avoids relying on a home computer and connection, but you still need to configure, monitor and maintain the server, and its bandwidth and compute must suit the job. Compare the value of recovery after an interruption as well as monthly charges: an apparently cheaper setup may require more attention or leave the channel offline longer when something fails.

There is also a YouTube duration constraint: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous broadcast plan should account for this limit and for how you will restart or manage broadcasts rather than assuming one uninterrupted stream can remain live indefinitely. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

When each approach is likely to cost less

  • A used laptop may win if you already have a suitable machine, its measured draw is low, electricity is inexpensive, your upload is reliable, and you can operate and recover the setup yourself. Include a purchase-cost share if buying a laptop specifically for this purpose.
  • A VPS may win if the laptop’s electricity and amortized purchase cost exceed a suitable server’s full compute, transfer and storage bill, and you are comfortable maintaining it. Confirm that the selected server can handle any live encoding requirement; transfer overage can erase a low headline price.
  • Neither DIY option may fit if you want cloud operation without server administration or a home machine running. A hosted service is a separate category; check its current terms and capacity rather than comparing only its advertised starting price with a compute-only VPS price.

Make the decision with five inputs: total monthly cost, whether you need real-time encoding, available upload speed, required uptime and recovery, and your willingness to maintain a computer or server. There is no supported general laptop-wattage figure for this exact workload, so a break-even answer without your own measured draw and local rates would be guesswork.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube prerecorded-video stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing at home has to stay on. It streams your uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
