The SD Card Association said in a July 13, 2005 announcement that microSD was fully interoperable with TransFlash. But the TF label alone does not tell you a card’s capacity, speed, or whether it will work in a particular device.
What does “TF card” mean?
TF stands for TransFlash, an earlier name for the small removable memory-card format now commonly called microSD. The SD Card Association’s July 13, 2005 announcement said microSD was fully interoperable with TransFlash and could be used in handsets designed for TransFlash cards. Will a microSD card work in a TF-labeled slot?
The historical TransFlash–microSD interoperability announcement supports treating the names as referring to the same basic card format. Still, a slot marked “TF” does not guarantee that every microSD card will work: the device must support that card’s SD capacity family. Capacity family matters more than the TF name
SD cards are divided into capacity families. These are standard ranges, not a guarantee that a TF-labeled device supports every family.

Host compatibility follows the supported family: SDUC cards require an SDUC host; SDXC cards work with SDXC and SDUC hosts; SDHC cards work with SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC hosts; and SD cards work with SD, SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC hosts. Does TF tell you the card’s speed?
No. Capacity family and performance rating are separate specifications, and the TF label does not identify a particular speed class or bus mode. If the device records video, runs apps, or has another performance-sensitive use, check its model-specific requirements and choose a card with a suitable documented rating. How to choose a card for a TF device
- Find the device’s make and model, then check its official manual or manufacturer information for supported SD family and maximum capacity.
- Choose a microSD card whose capacity family and capacity fall within those limits.
- Check the device’s performance requirements and compare them with the card’s stated speed specifications.
- If the card will go into a full-size SD slot, use a microSD-to-SD adapter; the adapter changes the physical fit, not the device’s compatibility limits.
Without a specific device model, its maximum supported capacity and required performance rating cannot be established from the TF marking alone.
