Not necessarily. A low price, the word “lifetime,” or even successful activation does not prove that a seller is authorized to transfer a legitimate Office license. Microsoft warns that keys sold separately from the software may be stolen or fraudulently obtained and can later be blocked. Before paying, verify the exact edition, seller, region, license terms, and how you will redeem and manage the purchase.
What “lifetime” does—and does not—mean
“Lifetime” is often used to describe a one-time purchase rather than a recurring subscription. Microsoft lists Office Home, Office Home & Student, and Office Home & Business as examples of one-time-purchase editions. The label alone does not promise unlimited installations, transfers between computers, upgrades to future Office versions, or perpetual support. Check the license terms for the specific edition you are buying.
Microsoft says these one-time-purchase editions can be installed on one PC or Mac. For Office 2024 and Office 2021, Microsoft generally permits transferring the license to another computer belonging to the purchaser no more than once every 90 days, except after hardware failure. Why a working product key is not proof of legitimacy
A product key is a means of activating software, not proof that the seller had the right to resell the license or that the entitlement will remain valid. Microsoft warns: “If you bought a product key separate from the software, it’s very possible the product key was stolen or otherwise fraudulently obtained, and subsequently blocked for use.” Read Microsoft’s guidance on product keys sold separately.

That means activation at checkout is not a guarantee: a key may work initially and later be blocked. The available official guidance does not establish that any particular marketplace listing or seller is legitimate, nor does it set a universal rule for resale rights in every jurisdiction.
Check an offer before you buy
- Identify the exact edition. The listing should state the Office edition, applications included, and supported operating system. “Office lifetime key” is too vague to tell you what license or software you would receive.
- Assess the seller and provenance. Prefer Microsoft or a credible retailer, and look for a proper receipt and clear license terms. A standalone key, an implausibly low price, or an unexplained region restriction deserves scrutiny. Microsoft explains that KMS and MAK are volume-licensing activation methods for organizations; instructions to use a work account or an organization’s KMS server are warning signs for someone expecting an ordinary consumer retail license. - Confirm what “lifetime” covers. Find out whether the offer is a one-time purchase or subscription, which devices it covers, and what transfer and upgrade rights apply. Do not infer those rights from the seller’s headline; compare them with the terms for the named edition.
- Verify the redemption and account path. Confirm that you can redeem the purchase through Microsoft’s normal setup flow and associate it with your own Microsoft account. Microsoft says an activated Office product can be associated with the account used for later reinstall or management, and that signing in replaces the product key for many tasks. - Review region, compatibility, and refunds. Check that the license is intended for your region and that the edition supports your computer. Read the seller’s refund terms before paying, especially what happens if the key fails or is later blocked.
- Keep purchase evidence. Save the listing, seller identity, receipt, license description, and communications. These records will help if you need to dispute the purchase or request a refund.

The key fails or stops working
Microsoft says error 0xC004C060 means the product key is no longer valid. If a key fails or is later blocked, contact the seller and request a refund, keeping your receipt and the original listing details. Microsoft’s genuine Office guidance describes how to remove counterfeit software before installing a legitimate copy.

Microsoft says the Office copy is not genuine
A “Get genuine Office” notice indicates Microsoft has determined that the installed software is not legitimate. Microsoft warns that counterfeit software can expose users to malware and data loss, lack security updates, or have editing features disabled. Follow Microsoft’s genuine-software guidance rather than continuing to use an installation identified as counterfeit.

Use the offer’s exact edition and terms—not its price or activation success—as the basis for your decision. A credible seller, clear proof of purchase, compatible region and device, redemption into your own Microsoft account, and explicit refund terms make an offer easier to assess, but these checks cannot authenticate an individual listing or guarantee that a key will never be blocked.
