Yes—720p is good enough for many YouTube Live streams when the important details remain clear and you can send a stable stream. For talking-head video, simple presentations, or content with little fine detail, a reliable 720p stream can be a better choice than a higher-resolution stream that drops frames or disconnects. Consider 1080p when viewers need to read small text or see intricate detail and your connection can sustain its higher bitrate.
When 720p is enough—and when to choose 1080p
Think about what viewers need to see, not just the resolution number. A talking-head stream or presentation with large, legible text may work well at 720p. Gameplay with small interface text, detailed demonstrations, or other content where fine visual information matters may benefit from 1080p, provided your encoder and connection can maintain the higher bitrate.
There is no resolution that is best for every stream. YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for your internet connection and testing before you go live. Its encoder recommendations are settings guidance, not a guarantee of the upload speed your particular home or venue needs. Allow capacity for connection variation, and test the actual setup.
720p vs. 1080p: YouTube’s recommended bitrates
YouTube’s current live encoder settings table gives the following recommended video bitrates. The recommendations differ by codec, but YouTube lists the same 720p bitrate for 30 and 60 fps.

YouTube also lists minimum settings of 2 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 3 Mbps for H.264 at both 720p frame rates. A minimum is not the same as the recommended bitrate. Use the recommendation for your chosen codec as a starting point, then test under realistic conditions; available upload capacity and stability still matter.

Choose frame rate, codec, and other encoder settings
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Use 60 fps when smoother motion is important and your encoder and connection can handle it; otherwise, 30 fps may be appropriate.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Video codec: YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for video ingest. Use the bitrate recommendation for the codec your encoder actually sends.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio.
These settings are drawn from YouTube’s live encoder guidance. Encoder menus and supported options can vary by software and hardware, so confirm that your encoder is set to the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you intend to send.
Test the stream before going live
- Set your target resolution and frame rate in your encoder, then choose the recommended bitrate for that resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Run a test using the real content. Include representative movement, small text or detail viewers need to see, and your normal audio. A static test may not reveal problems that appear during gameplay, demos, or camera movement.
- Check YouTube’s stream health during the test. Look for interruptions or dropped frames, and verify that important visual information remains legible.
- Adjust based on the result. If the connection cannot sustain the target reliably, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again. If 720p is stable but the content’s fine details are hard to see, try 1080p only if your connection can sustain its higher recommended bitrate.

Why viewer playback resolution may differ
The resolution you send is your stream’s ingest setting; it does not mean every viewer receives exactly that resolution. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats so viewers can watch on different devices and network connections. Playback quality can therefore vary by viewer.
Common problems and fixes
- The stream drops frames or becomes unstable: Your connection may not reliably sustain the selected bitrate. Test again at a lower bitrate or resolution, and leave more capacity for normal network variation.
- Small text or detail looks unclear: If the source contains the detail and your connection can handle it, test 1080p with the applicable codec-specific bitrate. Raising output resolution cannot restore detail that is absent from the source.
- The encoder’s settings do not match the recommendation: Check the actual codec, frame rate, resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, and rate control in your encoder. A bitrate recommendation depends on the codec and output settings.
- Your test looks fine, but the live event does not: Test with the movement and audio expected during the actual stream, then monitor stream health while live. A quiet or static test may not represent a demanding scene.
