Use the frame rate your video was recorded in: choose 30 fps for a 30 fps source and 60 fps for a 60 fps source. YouTube supports live streams up to 60 fps, but converting a 30 fps recording to 60 fps does not restore motion that was never captured. If you preserve 60 fps, plan for the higher recommended bitrate at the same resolution and codec.
How to choose between 30 fps and 60 fps
- Choose 30 fps when the source was recorded at 30 fps. It suits ordinary motion and has a lower recommended bitrate than 1080p/60 for H.264.
- Choose 60 fps when the source itself was recorded at 60 fps and retaining smoother motion detail matters, as it can with fast gameplay or sports footage. Make sure your streaming setup can sustain YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the chosen resolution and codec.
- Do not convert 30 fps footage to 60 fps just because you can. YouTube recommends encoding at the recording frame rate; raising the output rate cannot recreate original frames missing from the source.
The genre examples are practical guidance, not a YouTube rule that particular content must use a particular frame rate. The key factors are the source’s actual frame rate, motion detail, resolution, codec and sustained upload capacity.
Bitrate requirements: 1080p H.264 example
YouTube’s live-encoder guidance recommends different bitrates for 30 fps and 60 fps at the same resolution when using H.264:

|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not independent quality-test results or guarantees of how viewers will see the stream. Use the row for your actual resolution, frame rate and codec; recommendations differ across YouTube’s bitrate table. Leave headroom in the upload connection and test before an important stream. YouTube accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingest, lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs, and supports live frame rates up to 60 fps. It transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and network conditions. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

Set the frame rate in a prerecorded live workflow
Frame-rate selection is separate from scheduling and connecting the stream. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, you schedule a stream in Live Control Room and connect an encoder using the stream URL and stream key. Set the encoder to match the prerecorded source’s frame rate, then check stream health and test the setup before the intended broadcast. YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder
- Check the source file. Confirm whether it was recorded at 30 or 60 fps; do not infer this from the encoder’s maximum setting.
- Schedule the YouTube stream. Use Live Control Room to create or schedule it.
- Connect the encoder. Enter the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube in your encoder.
- Match the output to the source. Select the source frame rate and the corresponding resolution-and-codec bitrate recommendation.
- Test and monitor. Start a test stream and check YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup.
YouTube’s upload guidance likewise recommends encoding content at the frame rate at which it was recorded. Common rates include 30 and 60 fps. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings

Run prerecorded video continuously without leaving a computer on
For a one-off scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow gives you direct control over settings. If you want prerecorded videos to loop as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without your computer or home connection staying on. YouTube’s verified-encoder page lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video live streaming and describes Full HD and 4K at 30/60 fps; that listing is not an independent comparison of service reliability. Check YouTube’s rules for the video itself
Frame rate does not determine whether you have the right to broadcast the material. Before streaming prerecorded content, make sure you have the necessary rights and that your planned stream complies with YouTube’s policies.
