An IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) and a credit freeze guard against different kinds of identity misuse. An IP PIN helps stop someone from filing a federal individual tax return with your SSN or ITIN; a freeze limits access to your credit report to make it harder to open new credit in your name. Both are free, and you can use both if you are concerned about both risks.

What an IRS IP PIN protects—and what it does not

The IRS issues an IP PIN, a unique six-digit number, to help verify your identity when you file a covered federal individual income tax return. It is intended to prevent someone else from filing a return using your Social Security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN). The IRS explains the IP PIN program.

Anyone with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity may request an IP PIN, even if they are not required to file a return. A parent or legal guardian may also request one for a dependent, subject to identity verification. The IP PIN is not a general identity-theft shield: it does not freeze your credit file or prevent someone from applying for credit in your name.

What a credit freeze protects—and what it does not

A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report. Since creditors generally need to review a report before approving a new account, a freeze can make it harder for someone to open credit in your name. It does not stop every form of identity theft, and it does not protect your IRS tax account or prevent fraudulent tax-return filing.

Which one should you get?

Choose an IP PIN for concern about tax-return fraud

Consider requesting an IP PIN if someone has used your SSN or ITIN to file a tax return, if the IRS has directed you to use one, or if you want to opt in proactively. You do not need to have a filing requirement to request one if you meet the IRS identity-verification requirements.

Freeze all three credit files to limit new-account fraud

Consider freezes at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion if you want to make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name—for example, after a lost wallet, a data breach, or suspected identity theft. A freeze does not lower your credit score or disable existing credit cards, but a lender may be unable to approve a new account until it can access the relevant report.

Use both when both risks matter

An IP PIN and a credit freeze protect separate systems, so one does not replace the other. If you are worried about both fraudulent tax returns and unauthorized new credit, it is reasonable to use both. IRS notice guidance lists an IP PIN and a credit-file protective step separately for people whose information may have been compromised; see the IRS CP18A notice guidance.

How to request and maintain an IRS IP PIN

  1. Try the online account first. Sign in to your IRS online account, complete identity validation if required, and select the IP PIN option in your profile. The IRS identifies this as the fastest method. See the IRS request instructions.
  2. Check whether Form 15227 is available to you. For the 2026 guidance, a taxpayer whose adjusted gross income on their last filed return is below $84,000 if filing as an individual or $168,000 if married filing jointly may be able to use Form 15227, if the other requirements are met. The IRS calls applicants to validate their identity. Postal delivery estimates may differ across IRS pages, so consult the current instructions rather than relying on a fixed wait time.
  3. Request an in-person appointment if needed. If you cannot use the online or Form 15227 route, request an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center and bring the identity documents the IRS requires.
  4. Get the new PIN each year and use it on covered returns. An IP PIN is valid for one calendar year. If enrolled online, retrieve the new number each year. Use the current calendar-year PIN on covered federal returns filed that year, including a prior-year return filed during that calendar year. The IRS covers Form 1040-series returns; a missing or incorrect PIN can cause an e-file rejection or delay paper processing. See the IRS IP PIN FAQs.
  5. Keep the number private. Share it with a trusted tax professional only when needed to prepare and submit your return. The IRS says it will never request your IP PIN by phone, email, text, or social media message; see IRS Tax Tip 2026-56, dated July 16, 2026.

How to place and lift a credit freeze

  1. Contact all three bureaus. Request a freeze from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. Each bureau accepts requests online, by phone, or by mail. Start with the links and contact information on USAGov’s credit-freeze page.
  2. Lift the relevant freeze when applying for credit. Ask the lender which bureau it will check, then temporarily lift the freeze with that bureau. You can refreeze the file afterward. If you do not know which bureau the lender will use, ask before submitting the application.
  3. Allow time for processing. USAGov states that an online or phone request to place a freeze must be completed within one business day; a mailed request must be completed within three business days. Online or phone requests to lift a freeze must be completed within one hour, while mailed lift requests must be completed within three business days. These are official processing requirements, not a guarantee that every lender can proceed immediately, so check current bureau instructions before an imminent application.

Would a fraud alert be enough?

A fraud alert is different from a freeze. It leaves your credit report accessible but asks businesses to take extra steps to verify your identity before opening an account. According to the FTC’s comparison of freezes and fraud alerts, an initial fraud alert lasts one year and can be renewed; an extended alert for identity-theft victims lasts seven years. Consider it if you want a verification warning rather than restricting report access. It does not replace an IP PIN for tax-return protection.

If identity theft has already happened

If someone has actually used your identity, report it through IdentityTheft.gov and follow any case-specific instructions from the IRS or other affected organization. An IP PIN and credit freezes are protective measures for distinct risks; neither should be treated as proof that all misuse has stopped.
