Open the YouTube app and check Profile picture > Settings > Uploads. If your version shows Upload quality, choose Full Quality. That control is not listed in YouTube’s current official iPhone instructions, so it may be absent or labeled differently in your app. If you cannot find it, upload the original or highest-quality exported video and allow YouTube time to process higher resolutions.
Check for an Upload quality setting
- Open the YouTube app on your iPhone and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings, then Uploads.
- If Upload quality appears, tap it and select Full Quality.
This menu path was described in a 2020 Apple Support Communities user report, but it does not establish that the setting is available in current YouTube app releases. YouTube’s current [official iPhone upload instructions](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/57407?co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS&hl=en) document the upload flow without listing a separate Full Quality control. Check the Settings screen in your installed app rather than assuming the option is available to everyone.
Understand the Wi-Fi-only option
YouTube’s iPhone help documents an Upload over Wi-Fi only preference under Profile picture > Settings > Uploads. It controls which connection YouTube may use for uploads; it does not increase the resolution or detail in the video file. If you have a large video and want to avoid using mobile data, enable that preference and connect to Wi-Fi.
Upload the video through YouTube
- In the YouTube app, tap Create > Video, then select the file you want to upload. YouTube also documents uploading through the YouTube Studio app.
- Use the original recording or the highest-quality export you intend to publish. An upload-quality choice cannot restore detail that is missing from that file.
- Complete the upload and allow processing to finish before judging the available playback resolutions.
If the uploaded video looks blurry or lacks 1080p or 4K
Check whether higher-resolution processing is complete
YouTube makes a lower-quality version available first while it processes higher resolutions in the background. Open the video’s watch page, tap Settings > Quality, and check again later if the target resolution is not listed yet. YouTube’s example says a 60-minute 4K, 30-fps video can take up to four hours to finish high-resolution processing; that is an example, not a guaranteed processing time for every upload.

Verify the source file
Check the dimensions and export settings of the file you uploaded. YouTube converts uploaded videos for playback, and the resolutions it can offer depend in part on the quality of the original upload. If the source is standard definition, no setting in the iPhone app can turn it into original 4K detail.
Use encoding guidance when exporting
If you export the video before uploading, YouTube recommends keeping the frame rate at the rate at which it was recorded. Its [encoding recommendations](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en) cover formats and bitrate ranges by resolution and frame-rate category. These are export guidelines, not extra controls in the iPhone app.

Why a 4K upload may take longer
YouTube says 4K videos are four times larger than 1080p videos. Larger files can take longer to upload, and high-resolution versions can take longer to process. The actual time depends on the file and connection; YouTube’s stated four-hour example applies specifically to a 60-minute 4K video at 30 fps, not to every upload.
