To play music from an iPhone through a wired speaker, match the iPhone’s port to the speaker’s audio input. For a speaker with a 3.5 mm input, use a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with an iPhone 15 or later, or a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter with a Lightning iPhone, plus a cable that fits the speaker.
Check the iPhone port and speaker input
Look at the bottom of the iPhone to identify its connector: iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C; earlier models may use Lightning. Confirm the speaker or amplifier’s input before choosing an adapter. The adapter paths below provide a 3.5 mm connection, so they suit a speaker with a matching 3.5 mm audio input—not every wired speaker.
- iPhone: USB-C or Lightning.
- Speaker or amplifier: check for an input labeled 3.5 mm, AUX, or audio in. Make sure it is an input, not a headphone or line output.
- Cable: use one with plugs that fit both the adapter and the speaker’s input.
Connect a USB-C iPhone to a 3.5 mm speaker input
- Connect Apple’s USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter to the iPhone.
- Connect a 3.5 mm audio cable from the adapter to the speaker’s 3.5 mm input. If the adapter and speaker connect directly, a separate cable may not be needed.
- Turn on the speaker, start music on the iPhone, and select the wired output if the phone prompts you to choose one.
Apple identifies this adapter for connecting a USB-C iPhone to headphones or other speakers with a 3.5 mm connection. Check the speaker’s documentation if its input is different.
Connect a Lightning iPhone to a 3.5 mm speaker input
- Connect Apple’s Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter to the iPhone.
- Connect a 3.5 mm cable from the adapter to the speaker’s matching audio input.
- Turn on the speaker and start playback. If an output choice appears, select the wired route.
Apple says this adapter connects Lightning devices to 3.5 mm headphones and other audio devices, and specifies iOS 10 or later.

What if the speaker does not have a 3.5 mm input?
A 3.5 mm adapter alone will not match a speaker with a different input. Check the speaker’s manual or manufacturer documentation for the input type, then choose a cable or converter explicitly compatible with both that input and the iPhone’s audio adapter. Do not assume that a connector that physically fits will carry audio.
Apple also documents a USB-C to Lightning Adapter for connecting a USB-C iPhone or iPad to a Lightning accessory for charging, data, and audio. It may be relevant if your audio accessory itself has a Lightning connector; it is not the simplest route to a speaker with a 3.5 mm input. Apple notes that some features require iOS 17 or later and recommends using only one device or cable at a time with that adapter.

Before ordering, verify the iPhone port, the speaker’s actual audio input, whether you already own a suitable cable or adapter, and whether you need to charge the phone while playing music. The cited adapter instructions do not establish that arbitrary third-party adapters or hubs will work, or that a particular adapter supports charging and playback at the same time.

If there is no sound
- Confirm the adapter matches the iPhone’s port and is fully connected.
- Check that the cable goes to the speaker’s audio input, not an output or unrelated port.
- Make sure the speaker is on and set to the input you used.
- If the speaker has no 3.5 mm input, stop and check its documentation for a compatible connection rather than adding another unverified adapter.
- If you are using a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter, check that the iPhone is running iOS 10 or later.
Apple’s documentation supports its own USB-C and Lightning adapter routes; it does not provide a general compatibility guarantee for third-party accessories.
