The image is saved automatically in Photos. Tap the thumbnail that appears to crop, annotate, or—where the context supports it—capture a full page such as an entire webpage in Safari.
This guide walks through practical examples, explains which capture mode to choose, and shows alternatives when pressing two buttons is inconvenient.

Start with the button layout on your iPhone
The button combination depends on whether your iPhone has a physical Home button. Press both buttons at the same time, then release immediately; holding them can trigger other controls instead of a screenshot.
| iPhone layout | Buttons to press | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| No Home button | Side button + Volume Up | A screenshot thumbnail appears briefly, and the image is saved to Photos. |
| Home button | Home button + Side button | A screenshot thumbnail appears briefly, and the image is saved to Photos. |
Apple’s current iPhone User Guide for iOS 27 gives these exact button instructions in Take a screenshot on iPhone. If your screen uses different labels because of an iOS update, the physical-button rule remains the useful starting point: identify the Side and Volume Up buttons, or the Home and Side buttons.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Example 1: Capture exactly what is visible
- Open the app or screen you want to preserve.
- Press and quickly release Side + Volume Up, or Home + Side if your iPhone has a Home button.
- Wait for the thumbnail preview. Do not press the buttons repeatedly, or you may create several nearly identical images.
- Tap the thumbnail before it disappears if you want to edit it immediately. Otherwise, leave it alone and the screenshot remains available in Photos.
This visible-screen capture is the right choice for a single message, settings page, error dialog, map view, or any other moment that already fits on the display. It records the current screen rather than automatically extending through content below it.
Example 2: Capture a long webpage in Safari
A normal screenshot contains the visible screen. For a long page, Apple documents a Full Page option in supported contexts and gives an entire webpage in Safari as its example. Do not assume that every app offers Full Page; the option depends on the content and the app.
- Open the webpage in Safari and position it at the page area you want to capture.
- Take a screenshot using your iPhone’s button combination.
- Tap the thumbnail preview.
- At the top of the editing view, choose Full Page when that tab is available.
- Use the page preview to inspect the capture. It represents content beyond the initial screen, so check that the beginning and end of the webpage are included.
- Tap Done and follow the on-screen save choice to keep the result.
If you do not see Full Page, remain in the same app and context while checking the preview. Its absence does not mean the hardware shortcut failed; it means that this capture context is not offering the documented full-page mode.
Example 3: Keep only a detail with Crop
Cropping is useful when the original screen contains unrelated notifications, navigation chrome, or surrounding text. You can crop a normal screenshot or narrow a full-page capture to the relevant section.

- Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint., Etc.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail, or open the screenshot from Photos.
- Choose the crop control in the editing interface.
- Drag the handles inward until only the important detail remains. For a Full Page image, use the crop control on the page preview to select a smaller portion.
- Review the edges at normal size so that labels, numbers, and icons are not clipped.
- Save the edited image when the crop is correct.
Keep the uncropped original when the surrounding context may matter later—for example, when documenting which app produced an error. Use the cropped copy for a support ticket, presentation, or annotation where focus matters more than context.
Example 4: Explain the screenshot with Markup
Markup turns a screenshot into an explanation: circle the control someone should tap, draw an arrow to an error, or add a short label. Apple’s screenshot editor includes its Markup tools.
- Open the screenshot preview immediately after capture, or open the image in Photos.
- Enter the Markup tools.
- Choose a pen, marker, or other available drawing tool and add only the marks needed to direct attention.
- Use text or shape tools when a typed label or clean outline is clearer than freehand drawing.
- Save the marked-up image as a separate version when you may need the untouched screenshot later.
For technical reports, mark the smallest area that proves the issue. A concise arrow and one descriptive label are easier to interpret than covering the entire screen with highlights.
Where the screenshot is saved and how to find it later
iPhone saves screenshots automatically to Photos. Apple’s guide directs you to Collections > Media Types > Screenshots to view them together. From there you can open an image, edit it again, or select it for whatever sharing workflow you normally use.

If you edited the thumbnail but cannot remember where the file went, return to that Screenshots collection rather than taking another capture. Full-page images and ordinary visible-screen images can be reviewed there as well.
Alternatives to pressing two hardware buttons
Apple also lists Siri, AssistiveTouch, and Back Tap as built-in ways to take a screenshot. These are useful when a button is difficult to reach, when you are holding the phone in a stand, or when a hardware press is uncomfortable.
- Siri: use Apple’s voice assistant to request a screenshot.
- AssistiveTouch: use the on-screen accessibility control instead of simultaneous physical presses.
- Back Tap: use a configured tap on the back of the iPhone as the trigger.
The exact settings screens and wording can change with iOS releases, so use the current Accessibility and Siri controls on your device when configuring these alternatives. They produce the same basic screenshot workflow: a capture, an optional thumbnail edit, and a saved image in Photos.
Choose the capture that matches the job
| What you need | Best approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| A single screen, dialog, or message | Standard button screenshot | Only the currently visible area is captured. |
| An entire long webpage | Screenshot in Safari, then Full Page | Full Page is context-dependent; Apple’s documented example is a Safari webpage. |
| One chart, sentence, or control | Crop the screenshot | Over-cropping can remove context or labels. |
| Instructions for another person | Markup with arrows, shapes, or labels | Annotations change the copy you save, so retain an original when evidence matters. |
| Hands-free or accessibility-friendly capture | Siri, AssistiveTouch, or Back Tap | These alternatives may require setup in your current iOS settings. |
Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
Nothing appears after the button press
- Check that you pressed the two required buttons together and released quickly.
- Verify the layout: Home-button models use Home + Side; other models use Side + Volume Up.
- If the thumbnail was missed, open Photos and check Collections > Media Types > Screenshots.
The screen locks or another control opens
The timing or button pair was incorrect. Try a short, simultaneous press rather than holding one button first. On a Home-button model, do not substitute Volume Up for Home.

Full Page is not available
Full Page is not a universal app feature. Apple’s guide specifically illustrates it with an entire Safari webpage. Take the screenshot in Safari and check the thumbnail editor there; if the tab still does not appear, use a standard capture and crop the relevant visible sections.
The capture includes too much surrounding material
Open the thumbnail editor and crop with the handles. For a webpage capture, use the crop control on the full-page preview before saving.
Markup is hard to read
Undo cluttered strokes and use a small number of high-contrast marks. A crop that removes unrelated content often makes an arrow or label understandable without enlarging the drawing.
The interface looks different from these steps
Apple can revise screenshot presentation and editing controls between iOS releases. The current guide describes a choice between a full-screen presentation and a temporary thumbnail; your device may expose that behavior under different wording. Follow the controls shown on your iPhone while keeping the button combinations above as the capture trigger.

Or skip the browser setup
If what you actually need is an image of a website for a mockup, test, report, or AI workflow—not a photograph of your physical iPhone screen—ScreenshotNeo returns a rendered page from one request. Its API can accept the URL, wait for the page, and produce PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. The code and parameter reference are in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Every feature is included on every plan. The Free plan provides 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account when you need repeatable website captures rather than a device screenshot.
