If your iPhone is missing from iTunes, first check that you’re using the right Apple app for your computer, then unlock the phone and approve any Trust or accessory-access prompt. If it still does not appear, test a data-capable cable and another USB port before updating software or considering service. The steps below apply whether the symptom is “iPhone not showing up in iTunes” or “iPhone not showing in Finder.”
Open the right Apple app for your computer
The app depends on your operating system and setup; there is no special iTunes-only repair setting.
- Mac with macOS Catalina or later: Open Finder and look for the iPhone in the sidebar. If the sidebar is hidden, choose View > Show Sidebar. If macOS asks whether to allow the accessory to connect, click Allow. Apple’s device-location guide explains where to find a connected iPhone.
- Windows: Apple’s current general guidance uses the Apple Devices app. Connect the iPhone by USB and unlock it. iTunes may still apply to some supported setups; use the app appropriate to your installation. Apple’s Windows device sidebar guide covers finding a device in Apple Devices.
- Older Mac setup: The app used to locate the phone can differ by macOS version. Apple documents iTunes for applicable configurations; check its computer-recognition troubleshooting guide if Finder is not the right app for your Mac.
Unlock the iPhone and approve access
Keep the iPhone unlocked after connecting it. If Trust This Computer? appears, tap Trust. A Mac may separately ask permission to connect an accessory; click Allow there as well. Without the necessary approval, the computer may not be able to access the device.

If you previously tapped Don’t Trust or the Trust prompt no longer appears, Apple’s recommended reset is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. Then reconnect the iPhone and respond to the prompt. This resets location and privacy settings, not the phone to factory settings. See Apple’s recognition steps for details.

Check the cable, USB port, and iPhone port
Use a cable that carries data
A cable can charge the phone without providing a usable data connection. Apple’s guidance is explicit: “The cable must support both data and charging.” Try a different cable that supports both, with connectors compatible with your iPhone and computer. If the cable does not fit the computer’s port, use a compatible adapter. Apple explains the cable connection in its iPhone and computer guide.
Test another USB port or computer
Connect directly to a different USB port, then try another computer if one is available. These checks help isolate whether the original port or computer is involved. For update or restore operations, Apple cautions against connecting through a keyboard USB port because it may not supply enough power; that warning is specific to those operations, not a universal rule for ordinary recognition.

Inspect the iPhone’s connector
If the iPhone does not chime or vibrate when connected, disconnect it and check its charging port for debris. Do not insert metal tools or liquids into the port.

Update software and check for conflicts
Install current macOS or Windows updates, and make sure iOS is current. On Windows, update Apple Devices or iTunes, depending on which app your setup uses. If the iPhone remains missing after checking authorization and the physical connection, investigate software conflicts. Apple’s Mac guidance specifically identifies VPN and third-party security software as possible factors. Its recognition guide lists the relevant update and conflict checks.

Know when recovery mode or service is appropriate
Recovery mode is not the first fix for an iPhone that works normally but does not appear on a computer. It is relevant when the phone already reports recovery mode, displays a Connect to computer screen, or has an update or startup problem. If you are dealing with one of those cases, follow Apple’s update or restore troubleshooting instructions.
A factory restore erases information and settings. Do not use it as an initial recognition fix. Before any restore, back up the iPhone if possible and follow Apple’s factory-restore instructions. If the computer still cannot recognize the phone after the connection, authorization, and software checks, Apple says service may be needed; contact Apple Support or seek service.
