iPhone Lock Screen widgets appear on a selected Lock Screen, so you can check supported information as you wake or view the phone. Home Screen widgets sit among app icons and give you more room to choose a size, style, and position. Both can show at-a-glance information, and some can perform actions when the app supports them.
Where each kind of widget appears
Lock Screen widgets
A Lock Screen widget is part of a specific Lock Screen’s layout, alongside its wallpaper and clock. It puts selected information at the point when you wake or view the iPhone. Apple’s support guide specifies that adding Lock Screen widgets requires iOS 16 or later: Apple’s widget setup guide.
Home Screen widgets
A Home Screen widget lives on a Home Screen page with app icons. You see it after reaching that page, and can position it among your apps. Apple describes widgets as a way to view current information from an app at a glance, including headlines, weather, reminders, and battery levels: Add, edit, and remove widgets on iPhone.
How the layouts and choices differ

Not every app offers a widget for both locations, and the available options depend on the app and device. Check the widget gallery on your iPhone for the choices available to you. How to add a Home Screen widget
- Go to the Home Screen page where you want the widget.
- Touch and hold the background until the apps jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Add Widget.
- Choose a widget and an available size or style, then tap Add Widget.
- Position the widget and tap Done.
These steps follow Apple’s Home Screen widget instructions.
How to add a Lock Screen widget
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen until Customize appears.
- Tap Customize, then tap Add Widgets.
- Tap or drag a widget into the available widget area.
- Tap Done. If there is not enough room, remove an existing widget first.

Can widgets do more than display information?
Yes, some widgets support actions as well as glanceable information. Apple gives examples such as checking off a Reminders item, playing a Podcasts episode, or controlling a compatible Home device. - Choose the Lock Screen when you want supported information visible at the wake-and-glance point and the available space suits the widget.
- Choose the Home Screen when you want more room to position a widget among apps or select from its available sizes and styles.
- Use both when the app offers a useful option in each location and you want the information available at different points in your routine.
Neither location is universally better. The right choice depends on when you want to see the information, how much space you need, and which widget options the app provides.
