On iPhone, the Lock Screen and Home Screen have separate wallpaper settings. You can apply one selection to both with Set as Wallpaper Pair, or choose Customize Home Screen to give the Home Screen a different look. The Lock Screen also offers its own clock, widget, style, and control options.
What’s different about the two screens?
Lock Screen
The Lock Screen appears when your iPhone wakes or is locked. Alongside its wallpaper, it can show widgets and a customizable clock, and it offers controls. The available styling options can vary with the wallpaper you choose. Apple’s iPhone wallpaper instructions describe the Lock Screen customization options.
Home Screen
The Home Screen is where your app icons and widgets appear. It can share the Lock Screen wallpaper or use a separate appearance. Apple’s current iOS 26 guidance documents a color, a custom photo, or blur as choices when customizing the Home Screen wallpaper. Apple Support: Change your iPhone wallpaper.
How to set the same or different wallpaper
- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper, or touch and hold the Lock Screen to open the wallpaper gallery.
- Choose a photo, Photo Shuffle, or a built-in wallpaper, then tap Add.
- Tap Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the selection on both screens. To make the Home Screen different, tap Customize Home Screen and choose a color, another photo, or blur.
- To adjust the Lock Screen itself, use its Customize control. Depending on the wallpaper, you may be able to change widgets, clock appearance, styles, or controls.

Which setup should you choose?
- Use a pair when you want one coordinated image across both screens.
- Customize the Home Screen separately when you want a simpler background behind app icons, or want a different color or photo from the Lock Screen.
- Make the Lock Screen more functional by using its available clock, widget, and control options. The choices depend on the wallpaper.
Home Screen icons can change the look, too
In iOS 26, icon and widget appearance is a separate setting from wallpaper. You can choose light, dark, automatic, clear, or tinted appearances, and resize icons. These options can change how the wallpaper looks behind the apps, but they do not change which wallpaper is selected. Apple’s guide to customizing app icons and widgets.
iOS 26 details: spatial photos and Focus
Spatial wallpaper
On iPhone 12 or later, some eligible photos can be used as 3D spatial wallpapers. Apple says the effect appears on the Lock Screen, including when you set a wallpaper pair or customize the Home Screen. Not every photo is eligible; suitability depends on the image. Apple’s wallpaper guidance.

Multiple Lock Screens and Focus
You can create and switch between multiple Lock Screens, and link a Lock Screen to a Focus. That lets you select different Lock Screen setups for contexts such as work, sleep, or personal time. iPhone User Guide: Change the wallpaper.
