Precise Location lets an iPhone app use your specific location; turning it off lets an app with location permission receive only your approximate location. It is a per-app privacy control, not the same as denying location access entirely. Choose the least precise setting that still supports the app’s purpose.
What Precise Location changes
On iPhone, the Precise Location switch controls how specifically an individual app can use your location. With the switch on, the app can use your specific location. With it off, the app can still have location permission but receives only an approximate location. Apple describes approximate location as potentially sufficient for apps that do not need your exact position in its iOS 26 iPhone User Guide, reviewed October 4, 2026.
Location Services determines location using information available from GPS networks, Bluetooth connections, local Wi-Fi networks, and cellular networks. When an app requests access, iPhone displays the app’s request and the developer’s stated reason. Consider that explanation and the app’s privacy policy when deciding whether approximate location is enough; do not assume a particular app will work fully without precise access unless its current documentation confirms it.
How to change an app’s location precision
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Tap the app you want to review.
- Leave Precise Location on if the app needs your specific location. Turn it off to limit the app to approximate location.
This changes precision for that app; it does not by itself remove the app’s location permission. To change whether or when it can access location, review the permission options on the same app settings screen.

Choose precision separately from access duration
Precision and duration are different decisions. Precise Location determines how specific the information can be; permission duration determines whether and when an app can access it. Apple documents one-time, while-using-the-app, and background access. You can change permissions later in Settings. Background use may also prompt periodic reminders and show a map of the app’s location use, as described in Apple’s Location Services and privacy guidance and iPhone User Guide.
- For an app that only needs location during a specific task, consider one-time access.
- For an app that needs location while you actively use it, consider while-using access.
- Allow background access only when the app’s purpose calls for location when you are not using it.
App location access is not Find My sharing
If your concern is whether friends or family can see your location, review Find My, not just an individual app’s Precise Location switch. Find My has a separate Share My Location setting; when sharing with a person, you select a duration and can later stop sharing with that person or everyone. Changing one app is different from turning off Location Services
Turning off Location Services globally is broader than turning off Precise Location for one app. Apple says that when Location Services is off, apps cannot use location through that service in the foreground or background, which may limit important features. Apple also notes that iPhone location information may be used for emergency calls to aid response regardless of whether Location Services is enabled. Neither control should be treated as a guarantee that every service is unable to infer location by other means. See Apple’s Location Services guidance for details.
