Apple’s iPhone Duo is its first foldable iPhone, announced September 9, 2026. It opens from a 5.4-inch outer display to a 7.6-inch inner display, with iOS 27 features designed for the larger screen. Apple lists a U.S. starting price of $1,999. Preorders are scheduled for October 16, with availability beginning October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions; another 28 markets are scheduled for October 30. What is the iPhone Duo?
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable smartphone. It works as a compact phone when closed and opens into a larger display for viewing and multitasking. Apple says both screens use Super Retina XDR, ProMotion, and Always On, with peak outdoor brightness up to 3,000 nits.
Apple compares the 5.4-inch outer display’s screen area to 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro’s, and says the 7.6-inch inner display is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s. Those are Apple’s comparisons, not independent measurements. The displays share an aspect ratio, which Apple says helps content scale between folded and open modes.

iOS 27 adapts to the Duo’s folded and unfolded states. On the inner screen, Apple says users can run two apps in Split View, create app pairs, and open multiple windows of the same app. StandBy mode can run without the phone charging. Apple names Netflix, Zoom, and Slack among apps adapted for the device.

Apple Pencil with USB-C support is planned for later in 2026, so it is not a launch-day feature. Apple’s announcement does not specify a precise availability date or detailed compatibility requirements.

Apple claims up to 35% better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro. That is a manufacturer comparison; no independent benchmark result is established here. The company also describes a dual-battery architecture and a custom vapor chamber.

These are Apple test claims, not independent real-world results. Actual battery life varies with usage, configuration, network, signal, and other factors; the differing playback figures also show why screen choice matters.
How durable is the folding screen?
Apple describes a grade 5 titanium frame, Ceramic Shield on the back, Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display, and a hinge made from more than 100 components. The inner display uses protective layers and a nano-textured cover material. These are manufacturer descriptions; independent crease-visibility, drop, and hinge-longevity results are not established here.

Apple rates the iPhone Duo IP68 under IEC 60529 and says it was tested under controlled conditions to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. Apple cautions that liquid resistance is not permanent, can decline with normal wear, and liquid damage is not covered under warranty. Treat the rating as a test result under stated conditions, not a promise that the phone is waterproof.

Should you consider the iPhone Duo?
The Duo’s main appeal is the ability to move between a conventional phone-sized outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner screen with multitasking features. It may suit someone who expects to read, watch video, or work across apps on the larger display and is willing to pay the $1,999 U.S. starting price for a foldable design.
For a purchase decision, weigh the large open display and app features against the cost, the need to assess a folding screen’s long-term durability, and battery life that varies with display use. Apple’s announcement gives specifications and company test claims, but does not establish independent results for battery performance, crease visibility, hinge life, or everyday software quality.
