If your iPhone battery seems to drain faster after installing iOS 27, the update may still be completing background tasks. Apple advises waiting a few days, then checking again. If the problem continues, use Settings > Battery to find clues and try targeted adjustments rather than switching off every feature at once. These 13 checks are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed cures; Apple has not published a measured iOS 27 battery-drain rate or a promised runtime improvement.
Why might an iPhone battery drain after an iOS 27 update?
After an update, iPhone setup tasks can continue in the background and temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. Apple says to wait a few days and reassess. A September 15, 2026 report from 9to5Mac describes Apple’s explanation that these tasks can include indexing, asset downloads and app updates. That report is context, not a guarantee that every phone will be affected or that the drain will stop by a fixed deadline.
A warm phone or shorter battery life immediately after updating does not by itself establish a battery defect. If the issue persists, check which apps or system activity are using power before changing settings. Apple’s battery guidance does not provide a controlled measurement of iOS 27’s effect on runtime.
How to check what is using your iPhone battery
- Open Settings > Battery. Review any battery suggestions or Insights at the top. These may identify an ongoing update or device setup.
- Compare Daily Usage. The chart lets you compare the current day with the previous seven days. It is a usage comparison, not a prediction of how long your battery should last.
- Open View All Battery Usage. Inspect the leading app and system entries, then look at the detail for anything that stands out. The summary highlights the three highest battery users, with a fuller view available.
- Look for activity clues. An entry may indicate Background Activity, low or absent mobile coverage, or notification activity. Match any setting change to the clue you see.

13 checks and adjustments to try
Work through these in order, skipping anything that does not fit your Battery screen or needs. Several changes trade convenience or connectivity for possible runtime, so make them selectively.
1. Give post-update tasks time to finish
If the update was recent, wait a few days before judging battery life. Apple says background update tasks can affect battery life and thermal performance. You do not need to assume a permanent problem based on the first day or two.
2. Review battery suggestions and Insights
In Settings > Battery, check for a suggestion or Insight that identifies an ongoing iOS update or device setup. Use it as a reason to reassess later rather than treating it as proof of a faulty battery.

3. Compare with the previous seven days
Use Daily Usage to see whether today differs from your recent pattern. Consider what changed—such as heavier screen use or weaker reception—before attributing a difference to iOS 27 alone.
4. Identify the highest-use apps and system activity
Tap View All Battery Usage and inspect the entries. A high-use app is a lead to investigate, not automatically an app to delete: your own time spent using it may explain its share of battery use.
5. Target unnecessary background activity
If an app shows Background Activity that you do not need, reduce its background use or change how you use that app. Avoid disabling background activity across the board without considering whether you rely on timely updates.

6. Reduce notifications from a specific app if they are waking the phone
If Battery details point to notification activity, consider limiting alerts for that app. Keep notifications you depend on; reducing them can mean missing or delaying useful updates.

Reduce screen brightness to a comfortable level, or enable Auto-Brightness if it suits you. A dimmer display may be less convenient in bright conditions. Apple’s general battery guidance covers display brightness and battery use at Batteries — Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan.
8. Use Wi-Fi when it is available
For internet access, Apple says Wi-Fi uses less battery than a mobile network. Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network when practical.

9. Prefer a strong network signal
Weak mobile coverage can contribute to battery use. When possible, use your phone where it has a strong cellular or Wi-Fi signal. If Battery details show low or no mobile coverage, consider whether reception—not an app—is part of the pattern.
10. Use Airplane Mode only when you can be unreachable
If you will be without coverage for an extended period, Airplane Mode can prevent continued network searching. While it is enabled, you cannot make or receive calls, so use it only when that loss of connectivity is acceptable.

12. Use Low Power Mode when its trade-offs are acceptable
Low Power Mode reduces or disables some functions, including Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh and certain visual effects. Turn it on when extra runtime matters more than those features; Apple says it turns off automatically after the phone charges above 80 percent.
Adaptive Power may make performance adjustments and can turn on Low Power Mode at 20 percent, but it is available only on Apple’s listed models: iPhone 18 Pro models, iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, and iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Check your model’s eligibility before looking for or relying on this option.
13. Check Battery Health
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later. On iPhone 14 and earlier, use Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If the screen shows Service, Apple advises considering battery replacement through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

There is no reliable evidence here to rank these actions by measured effectiveness. Choose based on the activity and conditions shown on your own phone, and preserve features you rely on.
When to seek service
If battery drain remains a concern after the post-update period and targeted checks, inspect Battery Health. A Service indication is Apple’s cue to consider battery replacement through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. If Battery Health does not show Service, the available evidence does not establish that iOS 27 itself has damaged your battery; use the activity details and Apple’s guidance to decide what to check next.
