Apple’s Clean Up, Extend and Reframe tools can make useful photo fixes, but their output is not always faithful to the original scene. In a hands-on test, small Clean Up edits were the most dependable; larger removals, expanded backgrounds and stronger perspective shifts sometimes produced obvious or subtle inventions. Treat a plausible-looking result as generated imagery, not proof of what was there.
What the three iPhone photo tools do
Apple describes the features as ways to remove distracting objects, extend a photo beyond its original frame and adjust its perspective. They use generative editing: the result may look coherent while depicting details that were never captured.

The examples and judgments in this table come from Craig Grannell’s qualitative hands-on test for Amateur Photographer, published September 30, 2026. They are observations from particular images, not controlled measurements or a guarantee of how another device or photo will behave.
How do I clean up distractions in a photo?
- Open the photo in Photos and enter the edit controls.
- Choose Clean Up, then tap, brush over or circle the object you want to remove. If Photos highlights an object automatically, select that highlight.
- Inspect the filled area closely before keeping the edit. Apple’s iOS 27 guide lists Auto, Fast and High Quality processing choices; the available choice can affect how the edit is processed.
- If you save and want to undo the changes, use Photos’ reset option. For a side-by-side comparison, duplicate the photo before experimenting.
In the test, Clean Up removed a balcony edge cleanly in one sunset photo. More involved removals left ghostly traces. That makes it a sensible tool for a small distraction, but not a reliable way to erase a substantial object without changing the scene.

How do I extend the background?
- Open the photo’s editing controls in Photos and choose Extend.
- Drag or pinch the photo to expand the background beyond its original frame, then apply the edit.
- Check the newly generated area and the boundary where it meets the original image. Look for repeated or warped textures, malformed objects, inaccurate anatomy and text that no longer makes sense.
Grannell found an extension around a cropped meerkat tail plausible, but an attempt to extend a fossil image completed the skull and neck inaccurately. That contrast matters: a soft or simple background gives the tool less structured detail to invent than a fossil, animal or other distinctive subject.
How do I reframe the perspective?
- Open the photo in Photos’ editing controls and select Reframe.
- Drag the image to adjust perspective. Pinch gestures let you pan, zoom and rotate.
- Review the result at the intended viewing size and at high zoom, especially around fine textures, edges and background structures.
In the test, stronger Reframe adjustments made fur blurry and created an artificial-looking beach background. A hotel scene gained architecture that seemed locally plausible but did not represent accurate space. A convincing visual style is not the same as a faithful record.

Why can the results look convincing and still be wrong?
Generative tools fill gaps or reinterpret image content rather than simply retrieving missing information from the original capture. As a result, they can produce a visually smooth continuation that changes facts: a fossil’s anatomy, the shape of a building, or the lettering on a sign. Grannell’s examples also included distorted London architecture and signage. These are specific test outcomes, not evidence of a universal failure rate.
Grannell’s conclusion is appropriately cautious: “Right now, AI can’t reliably make changes without errors or invention and so it pays to always keep that in mind.” Apple’s description explains what the tools are intended to do; it is not an independent judgment of their accuracy.

When should you avoid generative edits?
For a personal snapshot, a small cleanup or modest extension may be an acceptable creative choice if you like the result. For documentary, editorial, scientific or otherwise evidence-bearing photography, avoid generative changes or clearly disclose them. A changed sign, fossil, building or person can make an image misleading even when the alteration is subtle.
- Zoom in on edited edges, textures, anatomy, text and architecture.
- Compare with the untouched original, preferably using a duplicate made before editing.
- Ask whether the image is meant to represent what was actually photographed or to create a pleasing composition.
- Do not use a visually plausible generated detail as evidence that the detail existed in the scene.
Which iPhones can use these tools?
Apple’s iOS 27 Photos guide lists Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models or later. Access also depends on software, language and region; Apple says availability varies, and server-dependent intelligent photo editing may have daily usage limits. Check Apple’s current Apple Intelligence availability and requirements before relying on access for a particular device or location.
