Verdict: The iPhone 6 was an excellent 2014 upgrade, but it is a poor mainstream smartphone purchase in 2026. Its design, Touch ID, headphone jack and daylight camera remain pleasant, yet the iOS 12 ceiling, aging batteries, uncertain carrier support and growing app incompatibility make it unsuitable as a dependable primary phone. Consider one only for a very cheap backup, offline media player, basic child’s phone or collector’s device.

Quick verdict

Category 2026 assessment
Design Still slim, comfortable and attractive, but inspect carefully for bending and repair damage
Display Sharp and usable, though small and dated beside modern phones
Performance Fine for basic tasks; limited substantially by iOS 12 and 1 GB of RAM
Camera Acceptable daylight photos and 1080p video; far behind modern phones at night
Battery Entirely dependent on the condition and quality of any replacement battery
Software Biggest weakness: no normal current iOS support and inconsistent app compatibility
Buying advice Avoid for normal primary-phone use unless it is exceptionally cheap and has a specific limited purpose

Which iPhone 6 is this?

“iPhone 6” normally means the 4.7-inch model, not the larger iPhone 6 Plus. Apple launched both in September 2014, but their screens, cameras and batteries differ.

Model Display Important differences
iPhone 6 4.7-inch, 1334×750 Smaller body and standard camera stabilization
iPhone 6 Plus 5.5-inch, 1920×1080 Larger battery, landscape interface and optical image stabilization

This review covers the 4.7-inch iPhone 6. The Plus model’s optical stabilization and larger 1080p screen should not be treated as features of the regular phone. See Apple’s launch announcement for the original model details: Apple Newsroom.

What made the iPhone 6 good in 2014?

The iPhone 6 replaced the iPhone 5s’s compact, squared body with a thin, rounded aluminum design and a much larger 4.7-inch display. It introduced Apple’s A8 64-bit chip, faster LTE and 802.11ac Wi‑Fi, improved autofocus, Touch ID and Apple Pay. Contemporary reviews praised its design, speed, screen and camera improvements over the 5s; the launch specifications are documented by Apple Support and TechRadar.

Design and build quality

The unibody aluminum construction, curved edges and shaped glass still feel refined. It retains a 3.5 mm headphone jack, Lightning port, physical Home button and Touch ID. At 4.7 inches, the screen is more comfortable for browsing than the 4-inch iPhone 5s while remaining relatively light.

The trade-offs are more important on a used unit. The thin body and rounded edges are less resistant to bending than the previous design, and the rear camera protrudes slightly. Documented “Touch Disease” reports were concentrated particularly around iPhone 6 Plus logic-board and touchscreen faults; a random touch problem on any unit still requires diagnosis rather than assuming one universal defect. Background on these issues is collected by MacRumors.

Check for a bowed frame, gaps between screen and chassis, screen lifting, dead touch zones, worn buttons, a loose Lightning port and signs of battery swelling. A phone that powers on can still be physically unsafe or unreliable.

Display

The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch Retina HD IPS LCD with 1334×750 resolution and 326 pixels per inch. Apple said it provided 38% more viewing area than the iPhone 5s. Text remains sharp, colors and viewing angles are good, and ordinary video is perfectly watchable. The specification is listed at Apple Support.

Apple iPhone SE 2nd Generation, US Version, 64GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.

Modern comparisons expose its age: there is no OLED, HDR, high-refresh-rate mode or edge-to-edge design. The size can feel cramped for maps, typing and video, while replacement displays may have poor color, touch response or coating quality.

Performance and software support

How it performed when new

Apple’s A8 processor made the iPhone 6 feel fast in 2014. Interface animations were smooth, apps opened promptly and ordinary games ran well. Its dual-core CPU and 1 GB of RAM were less limiting than the numbers suggested because Apple controlled both hardware and software; WIRED’s launch-era analysis explains that context.

The 2026 software ceiling

The iPhone 6’s last major operating system is iOS 12. iOS 13 dropped support for it and the iPhone 6 Plus in 2019. Apple now classifies the model as obsolete, so normal modern iOS features and security support cannot be expected. A reported iOS 12.5.8 update in January 2026 addressed legacy activation, iMessage and FaceTime infrastructure; it does not restore current software support. See MacRumors’ support context and its legacy-update report.

App behavior is unpredictable. Some older versions may install only if the Apple Account previously downloaded them, while current banking, authentication, navigation, social, streaming and messaging apps commonly require newer iOS versions. Safari may open a web service but modern pages can be slow, broken or blocked. A study of vintage Apple devices found that direct downloads were available for only a minority of tested apps, with better results for apps previously obtained through another Apple device; that is useful context, not a guarantee for a particular app (arXiv study).

  • Up to 19 hours video playback. Face ID. Ceramic Shield front. Aerospace-grade aluminum

Camera

The rear camera uses an 8-megapixel sensor with Focus Pixels autofocus, True Tone flash, HDR, panorama and 1080p video. Apple specified video up to 60 frames per second and 240-fps slow motion under supported settings. The front FaceTime HD camera is 1.2 megapixels; specifications appear in Apple’s announcement and technical specifications.

In daylight, photos have pleasant color, reliable exposure and reasonably quick focus. The camera remains usable for casual snapshots and 1080p clips. It lacks 4K video, Night mode, modern computational processing, an ultra-wide or macro camera, and current-level stabilization. Low-light detail and dynamic range are plainly behind newer phones. Macworld’s review noted the absence of 4K even during the original review period. Compared with the iPhone 6s, the 6 has lower resolution and video capability; compared with a modern budget phone, it is generally far weaker at night.

Battery life and durability

Apple rated the iPhone 6 for improved endurance over the iPhone 5s, but actual results varied with usage and network conditions (Apple’s specification note). In 2026, the original rating matters less than the individual battery. Many surviving phones have accumulated years of charge cycles, leading to rapid drain, heat, throttling or unexpected shutdowns.

Open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging and check Maximum Capacity, but do not treat the percentage as proof of real endurance. Replacement batteries can report inaccurately or vary in capacity and thermal behavior. Confirm that charging is stable, the phone does not shut down under load, and the battery is not swollen. Apple’s obsolete status means official repair and parts availability should not be assumed.

Connectivity, Apple Pay and security

The iPhone 6 supports LTE, up to 20 LTE bands depending on model, VoLTE in compatible configurations, Wi‑Fi calling where supported, 802.11ac Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. Band support varies by country and model. Before buying, obtain the IMEI and confirm with the intended carrier that the exact model is accepted, activated for voice over LTE and not blocked. LTE capability alone does not guarantee service after a carrier retires older network arrangements.

Touch ID and NFC enabled Apple Pay at launch, but having that hardware does not guarantee current payments. Bank, region and software requirements can prevent Apple Pay or banking apps from working. A device that no longer receives ordinary security updates is a poor choice for sensitive financial or authentication tasks.

What can you still do with an iPhone 6?

  • Calls and texts: Possible if the carrier accepts the model and VoLTE provisioning works.
  • Music, podcasts and offline video: One of the better remaining uses, especially with wired headphones.
  • Photos: Good enough in daylight; storage and battery condition are limiting factors.
  • Safari and email: Basic sites may work, but modern web pages and sign-ins can fail.
  • Streaming and social apps: Compatibility depends on the installed app version and service policy; do not assume support.
  • Banking, authentication and navigation: Do not rely on them without checking the exact current app and carrier requirements.
  • Emergency backup: Reasonable only after testing cellular service, battery, charging and location features.

Used iPhone 6 buying checklist

  1. Confirm it is the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, then verify storage in Settings → General → About.
  2. Check the model number, country compatibility and intended carrier before paying.
  3. Obtain the IMEI and verify that the phone is unlocked, not financed or blacklisted.
  4. Have the seller erase it and remove it from their Apple Account; never accept a device still showing Activation Lock.
  5. Inspect the frame for bending, screen separation, cracks and pressure marks.
  6. Test Touch ID, Home, power and volume buttons, cameras, microphones, speakers, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, charging and cellular service.
  7. Review Battery Health & Charging, then test for shutdowns, overheating and abnormal drain.
  8. Ask whether the screen or battery was replaced; non-genuine parts can affect touch, color, battery reporting and Touch ID.
  9. Buy only with a meaningful return window, and compare the total cost—including a possible battery replacement—with newer models.

iPhone 6 alternatives

Alternative Why choose it Remaining caveat
iPhone 6s A9 chip, stronger 7000-series aluminum, 12 MP camera, 4K video, Live Photos and 2 GB RAM Also old and not a modern long-term purchase
iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation) Compact Touch ID design with much newer processors and app support Battery and price vary by used condition
iPhone 8 Newer processor, improved camera and wireless charging Still aging; compare its price with an SE or iPhone 11
iPhone 11 or 12 Much better cameras, performance, battery prospects and software runway Larger bodies than the iPhone 6
iPhone 13 Strongest balance of modern performance, cameras and app compatibility Costs more than a legacy phone

The iPhone 6s specifications are summarized at Wikipedia. For a current used-phone comparison, July 2026 listings showed iPhone 13 prices from about $206 on Swappa, with averages around $284–$288 depending on configuration and date (Swappa). Back Market listings showed unlocked 128 GB refurbished units around $230–$251, with condition and battery choices affecting price, plus the marketplace’s stated 30-day returns and one-year warranty terms (Back Market). These are snapshots, not guarantees.
