Choose 256GB if your current phone has plenty of free space and you mostly stream media or use cloud photo syncing. Choose 512GB if you keep a large photo or video library, offline downloads, or creative projects on your iPhone—or want to spend less time managing storage. The right choice depends on what you keep on the device, not on a feature difference between the two configurations.
What changes between 256GB and 512GB?
Both are official iPhone 18 Pro capacities; Apple also lists 1TB and 2TB options. The storage size does not give the 512GB model a different camera or extra capture features. Apple’s specifications list 48MP image capture, 4K Dolby Vision video up to 120 fps, and ProRes and ProRes RAW formats for the iPhone 18 Pro. Those options can make more local space useful if you frequently record and keep large projects, but Apple does not publish a universal per-minute file-size estimate or storage recommendation for these workflows. How to decide based on the phone you use now
- Check your used storage. On your current iPhone, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Apple’s screen shows available space and storage use by app, which helps distinguish a large, persistent library from removable apps or downloads. Apple’s iPhone storage guidance
- Look at what is taking up space. Photos, videos, downloaded files, offline media, and project files may be worth keeping on the phone. Apps you rarely use or downloads you can easily replace are less compelling reasons to pay for more built-in capacity.
- Consider what will change. If your current device is nearly full, you plan to retain more high-resolution video, or you often work with large files locally, 512GB gives you more room before you need to offload or delete content. If your usage is stable and comfortably below 256GB, and you are willing to clean up occasionally, 256GB may be enough. These are practical decision rules, not Apple-published storage thresholds.
- Check your local price difference. Compare the two configurations at checkout in your market. The available price example below is specific to Apple’s Canadian business store, not a worldwide price guide.
When 256GB is the better fit
Pick 256GB if your current used storage is comfortably below that capacity and you do not expect your habits to change sharply. It is a reasonable choice for people who stream rather than download most media, routinely remove content they no longer need, or use a photo-cloud workflow that keeps the on-device library manageable.

When 512GB is worth considering
512GB is the stronger choice if you regularly keep a substantial photo or video library on your phone, save many shows or other files for offline use, or retain creative projects locally. It is also a practical choice if your current phone’s storage is consistently crowded and you would rather have more headroom than keep sorting content. The extra capacity does not remove the need to manage storage indefinitely; it gives you more room to do so less often.
If you record ProRes and want to use external recording, Apple lists external recording support in its technical specifications. That is a specific recording workflow, not a way to expand the iPhone’s built-in storage for apps or ordinary content. Verify compatibility before choosing an external drive for that purpose. Can iCloud Photos make 256GB enough?
With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage enabled, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while space-saving copies remain on the iPhone when needed. This can reduce the local space used by a photo library, provided you have enough iCloud storage.
