The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are available following Apple’s September 2026 launch. Both add a 48MP main camera with variable aperture and use Apple’s A20 Pro chip; the main buying trade-offs are price, screen size and handling, and how much storage you want. U.S. launch prices started at $1,199 for Pro and $1,299 for Pro Max. Neither model includes a power adapter in the box.
What’s new in the iPhone 18 Pro?
Apple’s biggest camera change is a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture. Unlike a fixed aperture, a variable aperture lets the camera adjust how much light enters the lens and how much of a scene appears in focus.
- ƒ/1.48: Apple says the lens opens this wide for low-light scenes.
- ƒ/1.8: Apple describes this setting for portraits.
- ƒ/4: The lens can narrow to increase depth of field, keeping more of a scene in focus.
Apple also cites upgraded Photographic Styles and video features. These are manufacturer-described capabilities; independent testing is not available in the cited launch information.

Both models use Apple’s A20 Pro chip and a next-generation vapor chamber. Apple characterizes the combination as its highest sustained performance in iPhone history. Apple also calls the Pro Max battery-life improvement the largest increase ever on iPhone, attributing it to silicon advances and a larger battery. Treat these as Apple claims rather than independent test results.

Apple says its battery testing was conducted in August 2026 on preproduction iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max hardware and software, connected to LTE and 5G and assessed using Apple’s representative usage profile. A verified runtime figure is not established here, so there is no hours-per-charge number to compare.
iOS and Apple Intelligence
Apple says iOS 27 became available on September 14, 2026. Apple Intelligence features depend on supported languages, regions, and individual features. At launch, Apple described Siri AI as a beta rollout beginning in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support planned for October. Apple’s specifications also say Siri AI is initially unavailable in the EU on iOS. Because language and regional availability can change, check Apple’s current feature and language listings before buying for a specific use.
What’s the difference between iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max?
The clearest confirmed differences are the Pro Max’s larger format and higher starting price. Both models share the same listed finishes and storage tiers. Apple’s Pro Max specification lists a 6.86-inch display measured as a standard rectangle and a weight of 249 grams. The viewable screen area is smaller than the standard-rectangle measurement. Detailed side-by-side dimensions for the Pro model are not established by the specifications cited here, so compare the phones in person if exact fit or one-handed handling is decisive.
| Decision | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. launch starting price | $1,199 | $1,299 |
| Storage options | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB |
| Screen and handling | Exact display size and weight not stated in the cited specifications | 6.86-inch standard-rectangle display; 249g, per Apple Support |
Choose the Pro if the lower U.S. starting price and a less-large form factor suit you; choose the Pro Max if you prefer its larger display and are comfortable with its listed weight and higher starting price. That guidance does not assume a particular battery runtime or camera advantage for either model.

What else should you know before buying?
Water resistance is not waterproofing
Apple Support lists the Pro Max as IP68-rated under IEC 60529, based on controlled-condition testing to a maximum depth of six metres for up to 30 minutes. Apple cautions that resistance is not permanent and liquid damage is not covered by warranty. Do not treat the rating as a guarantee against water damage.
Materials and recycled content
Apple says the phones contain 40% recycled content overall, including 85% recycled aluminum in the enclosure and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery. These are Apple’s material figures, not independent measurements.
