Yes, iPhone 18 Pro can record 4K at 120 fps, but not in every video mode. Apple lists 4K/120 for standard Dolby Vision recording on the Fusion Main camera; ProRes reaches that frame rate only with compatible external storage. Cinematic tops out at 4K/60, while spatial video is listed at 1080p/30.
Which iPhone 18 Pro video modes support 4K/120?
| Mode | Apple’s listed maximum | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Dolby Vision | 4K at 24, 25, 30, 60, 100, or 120 fps; 100 and 120 fps are listed for the Fusion Main camera | The headline 4K/120 option applies to the Fusion Main camera, not every camera or mode. |
| Cinematic | 4K Dolby Vision at up to 60 fps | Cinematic recording does not reach 4K/120. |
| Spatial video | 1080p at 30 fps | The listed spatial-video mode is not 4K. |
| ProRes | Up to 4K at 120 fps with external recording | Compatible external storage is required for ProRes at this resolution and frame rate. |
These are separate mode ceilings, not settings that can all be combined in one clip. Apple lists the same video specifications for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, so choosing the larger model does not increase the published video limits. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications
How do you record 4K/120 on iPhone 18 Pro?
Standard Dolby Vision recording
Choose the standard video-recording mode and use the Fusion Main camera for 4K/120. Apple also lists Slo-mo at 4K/120 on supported models; that is a separate mode, so select Slo-mo when you want slow-motion footage rather than assuming the standard recording setting applies to it. Available menu wording and options can vary with iOS updates. Apple’s iPhone video recording guide
ProRes recording
- Open Settings > Camera > Formats and enable ProRes.
- On iPhone 18 Pro models, configure Pro Video Storage as needed.
- Connect compatible external storage before recording ProRes at 4K/120.
Apple Support says iPhone 18 Pro models can record 4K at 120 fps when connected to a compatible external storage device. The phone’s specification lists USB-C with USB 3 up to 10 Gb/s. A portable USB-C SSD is therefore a relevant storage category for this workflow, but that specification alone does not establish compatibility for a particular drive. Can you record 4K/120 in Cinematic or ProRes without an external SSD?
Not in Cinematic, and not for ProRes. Cinematic is listed up to 4K/60. ProRes 4K/120 requires compatible external recording storage; internal storage alone does not meet Apple’s stated condition. Standard Dolby Vision 4K/120 is a separate option on the Fusion Main camera.

Does the iPhone 18 Pro Max record higher-quality video?
Not according to Apple’s published video rows: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max share the listed recording ceilings. Compare the models on size and other device considerations, not on an assumed difference in these video limits. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications
