iPadOS 27 still brings practical changes if your iPad cannot run Apple Intelligence—or you simply do not use it. Apple lists interface and performance refinements, improved search and app features, and expanded family controls. Whether those changes matter depends on your iPad model and how you use it; Apple’s performance claims are not a guarantee that a particular older device will feel faster.
What changes in iPadOS 27 without Apple Intelligence?
Apple’s iPadOS 27 update notes, published September 29, 2026, include several changes outside the Apple Intelligence feature group.
Interface and everyday system use
- More adjustable Liquid Glass: Apple says readability is improved and adds a slider that lets you adjust the appearance from ultra-clear to fully tinted.
- Search: Spotlight, Photos, and Mail are listed as offering more relevant and comprehensive search.
- Cross-device and photo changes: Messages syncing across devices is improved, and iCloud Shared Albums in Photos receive enhancements.
- Status bar and iPhone apps: App names can appear in the status bar, and iPhone apps running on iPad can be resized. If you only open a few phone-first apps on your iPad, resizing may be more noticeable than AI features.
- Performance: Apple reports faster performance in system experiences including app launches, AirDrop transfers, and moving files between iPad and an external drive. These are Apple’s stated improvements, not independent measurements for every model.
Family and child-safety controls
For a shared family iPad, the controls may be more consequential than the interface changes. Apple lists options to choose which apps a child can access during new child-account setup, approve new websites with Ask to Browse, and extend Communication Safety to shared images and videos. The update also adds app Time Allowances, schedules for app access, and redesigned Screen Time settings.
Which iPads can install iPadOS 27?
OS compatibility is broader than Apple Intelligence eligibility. Apple’s iPadOS 27 compatibility list includes, among others, iPad (9th generation), iPad mini (6th generation), iPad (10th generation), iPad (A16), iPad Air (4th and 5th generation), listed M-series iPad Air models, iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation) and later listed generations, and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (4th generation) and later listed generations. Consult Apple’s page for the complete model-by-model list; features and apps may vary by model, region, language, and carrier.

To check your model, open Settings > General > About. Then open Settings > General > Software Update. Apple Support says this screen offers the latest iPadOS software compatible with that iPad. The current update notes list iPadOS 27.0.1 as a bug-fix update, without enumerating individual fixes on that page.
Why an iPadOS 27-compatible iPad may not get Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence requires an iPad mini (A17 Pro) or an iPad with M1 or later, according to Apple’s Apple Intelligence setup guide. That is a separate requirement from being able to install iPadOS 27: a supported older iPad can receive the OS update without qualifying for the AI feature set.

Apple groups features such as conversational Siri with personal context, app actions and onscreen awareness, Siri integration with apps and Spotlight, writing with Siri, and AI-assisted Photos editing under Apple Intelligence. The update notes also describe Image Playground, natural-language shortcuts and Calendar features, Safari tab organization and generated extensions, and Apple Pencil-assisted selection for visual questions. These are not benefits to assume on every iPadOS 27-compatible model.
Even on eligible hardware, availability has limits. Apple says Siri AI is in beta, starts in English, and is initially unavailable on iPadOS in the EU. Language, region, feature, and usage limits can apply, and some higher-end voice and on-device model capabilities have additional model or memory requirements.

The second row does not make the non-AI changes exclusive to newer devices. For an iPad used only occasionally, the practical question is whether one of the ordinary changes fixes a real annoyance—such as hard-to-read interface elements, an iPhone app that does not fit well, or restrictions needed on a child’s device.

Check the exact model and the Software Update screen first. If iPadOS 27 is offered, the case for installing is stronger when you want a listed interface, search, app, syncing, or family-safety change. If you do not need those changes, the release notes alone do not establish a compelling reason to update for speed: Apple reports improvements but provides no model-specific real-world results here.

Apple’s general update note cautions that software updates can affect performance and battery life. That warning is not evidence that iPadOS 27 will slow a particular older iPad or reduce its battery life. Weigh the update for your own device and needs rather than treating either outcome as guaranteed.
