iPadOS 26’s most practical work change is its new windowing system: you can move, resize, tile and switch among app windows instead of treating multitasking as a fixed split-screen choice. Preview and Files also gain useful document tools. Whether those changes improve your day depends on the apps and workflows you use; Apple’s feature descriptions establish what the software can do, not measured productivity gains.
What’s actually useful in iPadOS 26?
The update is most relevant if you often move between reference material and a working document, handle PDFs, or return to the same project folders. Its key work-oriented changes are windows you can arrange, a dedicated Preview app, more configurable Files views, and additional background and audio/video capabilities.
Apple announced these features on June 9, 2025. They describe the operating system’s capabilities; they are not proof that every app supports every workflow equally well.
How do I use windows on iPad?
Turn on Windowed Apps
- Open Settings → Multitasking & Gestures.
- Select Windowed Apps.
- Open an app from the Home Screen, Dock, or App Library. In this mode, Apple says you can open multiple app windows and arrange them on screen.
Move, resize and find windows
- Move: Drag a window by its top edge.
- Resize: Drag a corner or the handle at the lower-right corner.
- Tile: Arrange windows side by side or in another supported layout to keep more than one visible.
- Find an open window: Use Exposé to see open windows and switch among them.
Apple says this windowing system works with Stage Manager and external displays. An external keyboard may offer an Exposé key, or the shortcut Globe key + Up Arrow, depending on the keyboard. Neither a keyboard nor an external display is required to use windowed apps.

When windows help—and when to check app behavior
A reference page beside a writing app is one possible use for two windows, but the feature alone does not guarantee that a particular app will behave well in a given arrangement. Check that the apps you rely on support the tasks and layout you want before reorganizing a routine around them.
Can I use multiple windows on iPad?
Yes. Apple describes iPadOS 26 as letting you open multiple windows, move and resize them, tile them, and switch among them with Exposé. This gives you more control over on-screen arrangement than a single fixed split. The exact usefulness depends on the apps involved and the screen space available.

Apple Support notes a version-specific distinction: Slide Over as an always-on-top window is available in iPadOS 26.2 or later. If you need that behavior, check the installed version in Settings before following instructions that assume it is available.
Can I mark up PDFs in Preview on iPad?
Yes. Apple describes Preview as an iPad app for viewing and editing PDFs and images. You can mark them up with Apple Pencil or touch, create a blank page for drawing or writing, and use AutoFill for PDF forms. Pencil is optional; touch is also supported.

This is particularly relevant if reviewing documents, adding notes to PDFs, or filling in forms is already part of your work. If you are considering a Pencil for this workflow, check compatibility with your specific iPad before choosing one.

- In List view, columns can be resized and folders can be collapsed.
- Folders can be customized with colors, icons, or emoji.
- Folders can be added to the Dock for quicker access.
- You can choose a default app for certain files or file types.
These options are most likely to matter if you routinely revisit the same folders or open many files of particular types. They change organization and access, not the contents of your files.

Apple also announced capabilities aimed at longer tasks and recording workflows. These are company-described features, not independently verified claims about performance or compatibility across apps.

- Background Tasks: Apple says long-running work can continue in the background, with Live Activities showing what is running.
- Audio input and voice: Per-app microphone selection and Voice Isolation are among the announced options.
- Video calls: Apple describes local capture for video-conferencing recordings.
- Audio recording: Apple describes studio-quality audio recording with AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Pro 2.
Because these options may depend on the app, hardware, or task, confirm support in the apps and devices you plan to use rather than assuming every combination behaves the same way.
Which iPadOS 26 features should you try first?
- You switch constantly between apps: Try Windowed Apps and see whether arranging two working windows suits your screen and apps.
- You review PDFs or images: Try Preview’s markup tools with touch or a compatible Apple Pencil.
- You keep returning to the same project folders: Try Dock folders, folder customization, or a default app for a file type you use often.
- You record or process media: Check the relevant app’s support for background tasks, microphone selection, local capture, and audio features.
Apple’s announcement describes the capabilities, but does not provide a productivity measurement or a time-saved figure. Treat the practical value as workflow-dependent rather than guaranteed.
