For more comfortable reading on iPad mini, start with brightness and the appearance controls in Settings > Display & Brightness. For multitasking, go to Settings > Multitasking & Gestures and choose Windowed Apps or Stage Manager. These are separate settings groups: one changes how the screen looks, while the other changes how apps share it.
Adjust brightness and appearance for reading
Brightness changes screen intensity. You can adjust it quickly in Control Center or open Settings > Display & Brightness and move the brightness slider. Apple notes that dimming the screen extends battery life, but it does not prescribe a universal brightness level; set it for the light in your surroundings.
To let iPad adjust brightness in response to ambient light, open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and turn on Auto-Brightness. Apple says the iPad uses its ambient light sensor for this adjustment and warns that turning Auto-Brightness off may increase power consumption.
Dark Mode, Night Shift, and True Tone do different jobs
- Dark Mode changes the system color scheme. You can turn it on in Display & Brightness and schedule it for sunset to sunrise or custom times.
- Night Shift shifts display colors warmer. Set a schedule or turn it on manually from the expanded brightness controls in Control Center.
- True Tone, on supported models, adjusts color in response to the surrounding light.
Try these controls one at a time while reading in your usual lighting. They change the screen’s appearance; Apple’s guidance does not establish that any of them prevents eye strain or provides a medical benefit.

Use accessibility display controls for more targeted changes
If brightness and appearance options are not enough, open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. These controls can change contrast, color, brightness, or the appearance of interface backgrounds.
- Reduce White Point tones down bright colors.
- Increase Contrast increases contrast between interface elements and their backgrounds.
- Reduce Transparency makes some transparent or blurred backgrounds opaque.
- Smart Invert reverses screen colors except in images; Classic Invert reverses all screen colors.
- Color Filters can apply grayscale, color adjustments, or a tint. Filters can also change how images and video appear.
- Differentiate Without Color and On/Off Labels offer alternatives to cues that rely on color alone.
Choose a multitasking mode
On iPadOS 26, Windowed Apps and Stage Manager are options under Settings > Multitasking & Gestures. Both support working with multiple apps, but their window arrangements differ. Apple describes Windowed Apps as a way to move and resize windows and place two apps side by side. Stage Manager emphasizes overlapping, resizable windows and app groups.

Neither mode is established as universally faster or better. Choose based on the layout you need and confirm that your exact iPad mini model and installed iPadOS support the feature.
Turn on Windowed Apps and arrange two apps
- Open Settings > Multitasking & Gestures and enable Windowed Apps.
- Open the first app. Drag a second app from the Dock, App Library, or Spotlight to the left or right edge of the screen.
- Drag the divider between the windows to adjust how much space each app gets.
Check Stage Manager compatibility before enabling it
Apple’s iPadOS 26 Stage Manager article lists iPad mini (A17 Pro) as compatible. The same article’s general Stage Manager list includes iPad mini (5th generation and later), but compatibility guidance is version- and model-specific, so check the exact model and installed iPadOS before relying on it. To try the feature, open Settings > Multitasking & Gestures and turn on Stage Manager.

Do not assume that Stage Manager on iPad mini also supports moving its apps and windows to an external display: Apple’s list of models with that external-display workflow does not include iPad mini.

An external keyboard is not required for either display adjustment or the documented window layouts. Apple also documents a keyboard shortcut to view recent apps; the key combination depends on the keyboard. Verify compatibility and shortcut behavior for the particular keyboard you plan to use.
