Use IP geolocation when a broad estimate—such as a likely country or service region—is enough. Use browser geolocation when a feature needs the device’s current coordinates, such as finding nearby results, and the user agrees to share them. IP lookup does not require a browser location prompt; browser geolocation requires permission and a secure context. Neither method proves someone’s identity or pinpoints their home.
What each method actually locates
IP geolocation estimates a network’s region
An IP geolocation service maps the public IP address seen by a website to a likely region, using provider data. That address may belong to a VPN, proxy, mobile carrier gateway, or other intermediary—not directly to the person using the site. Depending on the address and available data, the result may be broad or lack city-level detail. A point displayed on a map is an estimate, not the person’s exact position.
Browser geolocation requests the device’s position
The browser Geolocation API can provide coordinates after the user grants permission. The device and browser use available positioning methods, which may include GPS and network-based sources. The API also returns an accuracy estimate, but it does not promise GPS-level precision. A quick result may be less accurate if a more precise fix has not yet become available.
MDN describes the API as allowing users to provide their location to web applications if they choose: MDN Geolocation API.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the methods compare
| Decision factor | IP geolocation | Browser geolocation |
|---|---|---|
| What it estimates | The likely region associated with the public IP address visible to the service. | The device’s position, returned as coordinates with an accuracy estimate. |
| Best suited to | Broad regional context, such as selecting a likely country or service area. | Features that need a device position, such as nearby results. |
| User interaction | Does not invoke the browser’s location permission prompt. | Requires user permission if access has not already been decided. |
| Key sources of error or variation | VPNs, proxies, cellular routing, ISP practices, and gaps in provider data. | Available device positioning sources, time to fix, and whether a more precise result is available. |
| Web requirements | No browser geolocation permission prompt is needed to perform the lookup. | Requires a secure context in supporting browsers and can be blocked by Permissions Policy. |
How accurate is each method?
IP accuracy depends on the address and provider
MaxMind reports 99.8% country-level accuracy for its GeoIP product. For the United States, it reports around 80% state- or region-level accuracy and 66% city accuracy within a 50 km radius. These are MaxMind’s estimates, not universal rates for every IP database or guarantees for individual lookups; they are also not a head-to-head comparison with browser geolocation. The accessed documentation does not state a publication year for these figures.
MaxMind says results vary by country, network type, IP version, and ISP practice. A VPN or proxy may yield the server or exit location; a cellular connection may appear to come from an address serving a broad area. Granular city or postal-code results may be omitted when the provider cannot support them. MaxMind cautions that GeoIP data is not precise enough to identify or locate a specific household, individual, or street address: MaxMind Geolocation accuracy.

Browser accuracy is an estimate, not a fixed guarantee
MDN documents GeolocationCoordinates.accuracy as a positive distance in meters representing a 95% confidence level for latitude and longitude. That describes the API’s reported estimate; actual positioning sources and time to fix vary. Requesting high accuracy may take longer and use more resources, and it cannot ensure the browser will obtain a more precise fix.
Permissions, privacy, and failure handling
Make location access understandable and optional
Browser geolocation is available only in secure contexts in supporting browsers, and access depends on user permission. Prompt behavior and permission duration vary by user agent. A Permissions Policy can block access, including in embedded contexts; cross-origin frames need policy authorization. Ask for location in response to a clear user action, explain what the feature will do, and make declining a usable choice.

An IP lookup typically avoids a browser location prompt, but it still processes an IP address and creates a potentially sensitive inference. Explain that use in your privacy practices and limit how much location detail you retain or expose. Do not treat an IP estimate as proof of identity, a precise address, or reliable evidence of where a specific person was physically present.

Keep a fallback for both methods
- For browser geolocation, provide a manual location-entry option or an appropriate coarse fallback when permission is denied, the position is unavailable, or the request times out.
- For IP geolocation, allow for missing or broad results; do not make a feature depend on city-level data being available.
Choose based on what the feature needs
- Choose IP geolocation when a broad regional estimate is sufficient and avoiding a browser location prompt matters—for example, showing a likely country or service area.
- Choose browser geolocation when the feature needs the device’s current position and the user can make an informed choice to share it.
- Offer a fallback when location access is optional or either method can fail; manual entry is often the clearest alternative.
