On March 20, 2015, Invision Community announced a security patch for IP.Board 3.3.x and 3.4.x. The vendor said specifically crafted URLs could trigger an SQL error under specific configurations. For self-hosted forums, the instruction was to download the ZIP for the applicable branch and upload its files to the forum server. Cloud customers on IP.Board 3.4 or later were already patched, according to the vendor.
What the March 2015 notice says
In its March 20, 2015 security notice, Invision Community wrote: “We are releasing a patch for IP.Board 3.3.x and 3.4.x to address an SQL injection issue.” The notice described the reported behavior this way: “It has been brought to our attention that specifically crafted URLs may allow an attacker to trigger an SQL error with specific configurations.”
That is the scope of the vendor’s public description: a crafted URL could trigger an SQL error in certain configurations. The notice does not say that arbitrary SQL execution was demonstrated. It also does not identify the vulnerable code path or assign a CVE number to this issue.
Which IP.Board versions were covered?
The March notice covers self-hosted IP.Board 3.3.x and 3.4.x, with separate patch archives for each branch. It also gives two deployment-specific exceptions:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Cloud hosting: Invision Community said its cloud customers running IP.Board 3.4 or above had already been patched.
- New 3.4.7 installations or upgrades: The vendor said no further action was required if IP.Board 3.4.7 was installed or upgraded after the notice, because the main download ZIP files had been updated.
How self-hosted operators were told to apply the patch
- Identify whether the forum runs IP.Board 3.3.x or 3.4.x.
- Download the patch ZIP for that version branch from the vendor’s March 2015 notice.
- Upload the files in the archive to the forum server, following the notice’s instructions.
The March notice does not describe a separate installer, database operation, or upgrade-system procedure. Operators should not infer additional steps from the separate 2014 advisory, which discussed a different issue.
Do not confuse this patch with other Invision Board vulnerabilities
Several other advisories involve Invision Board or Invision Community, but they describe different issues and should not be used to characterize the March 2015 patch.
