Spring Data Elasticsearch 5.5 is a Spring Data integration for Java applications that access Elasticsearch; it is not the Elasticsearch server. Choose repository support when you want a higher-level Spring Data programming model, or use the imperative or reactive template APIs when you need to work more directly with Elasticsearch operations. The 5.5 line is now marked out of maintenance in Spring’s version information, so check compatibility and support status before adopting it for a new project.

What Spring Data Elasticsearch 5.5 provides

Spring Data Elasticsearch gives Spring applications a data-access programming model for Elasticsearch. Its 5.5 feature set includes client configuration, object mapping between Java objects (POJOs) and index operations, annotation metadata, conversion-aware mapping, exception translation into Spring’s data-access exception hierarchy, and Java APIs for queries, criteria, and updates. It also provides imperative and reactive repository implementations, including support for custom query methods. Spring Data Elasticsearch 5.5 reference

This library sits in the application layer: it helps Java code work with Elasticsearch. It does not replace or bundle the Elasticsearch server. Spring’s reference identifies repositories and the imperative or reactive ElasticsearchTemplate helpers as common choices for data-oriented work; both use Spring Data’s object-mapping functionality.

Choose between repositories and templates

Access style What it offers Consider it when
Repositories A higher-level Spring Data abstraction, including automatic imperative or reactive implementations and custom query methods. You want application code organized around repository interfaces and Spring Data conventions.
ElasticsearchTemplate or ReactiveElasticsearchTemplate Operations-oriented helpers that provide object mapping between index operations and POJOs. You want to express data-access operations more directly instead of relying primarily on repository abstractions.

The overview establishes that both styles are available; it does not establish a universal winner or document every query, mapping, or configuration edge case. Pick the abstraction that fits the way your application is structured, then consult the versioned reference for its specific APIs.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Imperative or reactive

The 5.5 line includes both imperative and reactive repository support, as well as imperative and reactive templates. Match that choice to the programming model already used by the application. The existence of reactive APIs alone does not establish that every part of an application or every operation should be reactive; check the relevant 5.5 documentation for the APIs and constraints that apply to your use case.

Check the 5.5 compatibility and maintenance status

Spring’s compatibility table aligns the 2025.0 Spring Data release train with Spring Data Elasticsearch 5.5.x, Elasticsearch 8.18.1, and Spring Framework 6.2.x. This is a release-train alignment, not a guarantee that every arbitrary combination of library, server, and client versions is compatible. Spring Data Elasticsearch versions and compatibility

The same official versions page lists 5.5.13 as stable and marks the 5.5.x line out of maintenance; it also lists 6.1.1 as the latest stable Spring Data Elasticsearch version in the documentation state reflected there. These labels can change. Before selecting dependencies, check the current compatibility matrix and the Spring Data BOM used by your build rather than assuming that the version numbers alone establish a supported combination.

Plan a 5.5-to-6.0 upgrade

Moving from 5.5.x to 6.0.x is a major upgrade, not simply a routine patch change. The official migration guide describes changes to the Elasticsearch client libraries, configuration, and APIs. Use it alongside tests of your actual application code; the points below are a planning checklist, not a complete migration recipe. Spring Data Elasticsearch 6.0 migration guide

  • Client libraries and default: 6.0 uses Elasticsearch 9 libraries and defaults to the new Rest5Client. The older RestClient remains possible.
  • Client configuration: Configuration callbacks for the old client move to a different package. Review the migration guide’s package and configuration changes before updating client setup.
  • UpdateQuery field types: ifSeqNo and ifPrimaryTerm change from Integer to Long. Check code that constructs or consumes these values.
  • Renamed, moved, or deprecated APIs: Older RestClient classes are deprecated and moved under a rest_client package; the guide directs users toward rest5_client classes.
  • Removed scripting API: ScriptType is removed in favor of ScriptData.
  • Other client-dependent removals: The guide lists additional methods removed because Elasticsearch Client 9 no longer supports them. Review the full list for APIs your application uses.

After applying the migration, verify client initialization, queries, updates, scripts, and any code that relies on affected APIs against the complete current guide and your project’s tests.
